Remember when Serena Williams said, “Join me as we celebrate the best of the best,” in the teaser for the ESPY Awards? Organizers took her words to heart, unveiling some truly ‘Royal’ names among the award recipients. The buzz around this year’s ESPYs is electric. The announcement of Prince Harry being honored has certainly added a regal touch to the event. But for tennis legend Serena Williams, the most exciting prospect might just be a reunion with her old friend Meghan Markle.
The Duke of Sussex is set to be honored with the Pat Tillman Award for Service in recognition of his creation of the Invictus Games. Since 2014, these games have provided wounded service members with the opportunity to compete in Olympic-style sporting events. Now, Harry’s honor signals the presence of Meghan Markle at the event.
The Duchess of Sussex and the former tennis player have known each other since 2010. They first met at the Super Bowl and became close friends after reconnecting in 2014 at another Super Bowl. Markle has been open about her close relationship with Williams, about whom she wrote in her popular blog, The Tig, in August 2014.
