How could ESPN overlook Serena and Steffi? Is this the ultimate disrespect to tennis legends?

A paradoxical and faulty display by ESPN marks the beginning of the women’s final. How is it possible to forget the two greatest players of the game, Serena Williams and Steffi Graf, after they have left an indelible and unforgettable legacy on the tennis circuit? Anything is possible at the Grass Slam 2024, as the channel put up a huge display omitting the historical achievements. And tennis fans certainly won’t take this blunder lying quietly in a laid-back manner as they rise in arms to remind them of Wimbledon’s history!

The prim and proper Grass Slam seems to be embroiled in one controversy after another as the end nears, with its no fault. Yesterday, it was Daniil Medvedev who was out there to add another streak of controversy to his list. However, today, it’s ESPN! The paradoxical display meant to celebrate Channel slam winners- players who won the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year were missing two names. – William and Graf.

This comes in the backdrop of the release of Williams’ eight-part documentary-series, “In the Arena: Serena Williams!” Sharing the banner, Myles David highlighted ESPN’s blunder to the tennis circuit with the caption on X:

While Williams has achieved this feat mammoth twice, Graf claimed it four times. The transition from Clay to Grass is considered a tough task, and Williams’ dominance during her heydays is displayed by not only successfully transitioning but also winning both titles twice. And to utterly disregard such a feat after a close look at her career through ESPN’s latest venture was not expected by tennis fans. And they take it up on Twitter to remind the channel of its fault.

Williams’s presence on the court still lingers despite her retirement almost two years ago. However, the channel may have forgotten, but the Grass court and tennis fans would certainly remember her every twirl, win, controversy and Grand Slam she claimed. Thus leaving no room for anyone to fault the GOAT’s record. And this tennis fan reminded the channel about the name they forgot to add, “How about Serena? You suck @espn.”

Have an interesting take?

This Wimbledon is special for the Channel Slam, as Chris Evert celebrates her first win, 50 years ago, at the Grass Slam after she claimed the French Open title the same year. And Jasmine Paolini made it special after becoming the first woman after Williams in 2016 to play in the finals of both slams. And the list was displayed to celebrate the same spirit. However, missing Williams’ feat of attaining 2 channel slams(2002, 2015) is not appreciated by tennis fans, as they took it upon themselves to remind the channel of every fact. They said, “ESPN, mind you, she did it twice…”

However, what’s driving tennis fans crazy is the fact that it’s not even a week since the launch of the much-awaited documentary-series showcasing Williams’s journey. And the channel is quick to forget her legendary success. Consequently, they were not ready to let go of this blunder and were on the verge of breaking their TV. “I almost threw my phone at the TV.”

But this Grass swing seems to be a blunder swing for ESPN. As earlier, during the quarterfinal match of Anna Kalinskaya and Elena Rybakina, the channel chose to show Emma Navarro’s practice. And now this blunder as the women’s draw nears its end could cost ESPN its viewership. Some tennis fans are ready to let the channel go. They said, “Please go away ESPN!”

Hopefully, there won’t be any more controversy regarding the prestigious Grass Slam. However, if things don’t go the right way, tennis fans are ready to march on X and may be in the arena to set things straight!
