Sloane Stephens says entrepreneurship isn't for the weak—do you agree with her tough-love approach?

Being an entrepreneur is like a mindset. Entrepreneurs have to see things as opportunities all the time, and successful entrepreneurship starts with believing in your own abilities and vision. It’s not an easy journey, and only a successful entrepreneur can walk us through the harsh realities of building something from scratch. American tennis star Sloane Stephens recently launched her body care brand, Doc & Glo. It’s known for creating an all-gender deodorant and body mist. Starting a new journey is always difficult, but how does Stephens feel now about being an entrepreneur?

Tennis players often undergo rigorous training sessions and play matches under harsh weather conditions. Sometimes these things can take a toll on one’s beauty and skincare routines. So, we often see multiple tennis stars coming up with their own brands to take care of all those things while they’re on the courts. According to Sloane Stephens, she has “pretty much tried it all” when it comes to body care. However, due to complex routines, there are times when players forget the “basic” steps which are extremely necessary to take proper care of their bodies.

So, to make things easier, she came up with two products, No. 3161 Game-Changin Deodorant ($18) and the 24/7 Hustle Deodorizing Body Mist ($22). Stephens admitted that she has tested each of them while playing her “hardest” matches, but how hard has been the journey for her as an entrepreneur? Well, the first thing she figured out while entering this world, was “Entrepreneurship is not for the weak.” She feels, “Learning a new business is a whole different beast,” but why?

Sloane Stephens revealed, “It’s finding retailers, cold emailing people, messaging them on LinkedIn, finding the right manufacturer — things like that.” Plenty of challenges came on her way but she said that she always found a way to “pivot” and be nimble. That’s perhaps the secret to success in the world of entrepreneurs. “It’s definitely something that you have to be totally ready for,” said Stephens. Even her husband, Jozy Altidore has supported a lot in her mission to launch her new venture.

What does beauty and personal care mean to Sloane Stephens?

Well, in answer to this same question in her interview with PEOPLE, Sloane Stephens also revealed the hard work she has put behind this project. The 31-year-old tennis star revealed, “Making custom formulations, everything from scratch, was a process. I didn’t want to rush anything. It was very much my passion project: beauty has always been something I’ve been really passionate about.” In between all of these, she has also learned the importance of work-life balance.

Her motto is, “Don’t cheat yourself, treat yourself. You only have one life to live, so treat yourself as if you’re the queen as if you’re the princess.” She believes once we realize that we can do something for ourselves each and every day, we automatically tend to feel better in our lives. Once, during an interview in March 2021, she was asked to reflect a bit on how she makes business and investment decisions. Her answer to this was her investing decisions are purely based on her personal experiences. For example, if she finds a product good enough for herself, only then she tells everyone about it. From a tennis prodigy to a beauty entrepreneur, it has been a remarkable journey for Sloane Stephens.

Even this project of Doc & Glo has a blend of her grit and grace. It’s basically an answer to the hygiene hurdles that the athletes faced during COVID-19 when they were unable to use facilities like showers or freshen up after rigorous practices. Therefore, she calls it her, “COVID baby.” Speaking more about her products, Stephens added, “I hope that it empowers people to do more. I think these products are really products that are made to make you feel comfortable.”

Maintaining a fixed routine has been a key to her body care. That’s why people often say if you want recommendations for a seriously high-performance body care routine, ask a professional athlete. Sloane Stephens is one of the right people to answer all your queries on this!
