After helping Coco Gauff land her first major grand slam title, coach Pere Riba stunned everyone when he announced that he would be parting ways with the young American champion. Post that, he joined hands with Chinese sensation Qinwen Zheng and is helping her emulate the same success that he once did with Gauff. What is not known to many is the fact that the two share a very special bond.
So much so that he even gave her the name ‘kid’. Reflecting on the same, in an interview, the Spanish coach revealed why he likes to call her a ‘kid’ and talked about the energy that she brings to the court.
Pere Riba reveals why he calls Qinwen Zheng a ‘kid’

In a recent revelation, Pere Riba recalled a time back when they started working together. Qinwen Zheng was just 17, almost 18, so he started calling her ‘kid’. People loved it because Qinwen brought a lot of happy energy. Riba keeps using the nickname because it’s become a fun and friendly thing. It’s not just about her age, it’s like saying she brings a young and cheerful vibe to their work.
“She has a lot of nicknames you know I say to her kid you know like because when we started to work like she was 17 years old to close to 18 and then was like really really young and I started to say to her kid and yeah I continue saying that and yeah people love it Qinwen you know that for the energy that that she brings,” said Riba in the interview.
While reflecting on the energy that she brings to the stadium, he revealed that she is very childish. Interestingly, the two have worked earlier as well which became one of the major factors for the reunion of the two yet again.

Riba talks about his past stint with Zheng and her work ethic
In another interview, Riba talked about the bond between the two and suggested that the two years that they worked earlier together were beautiful. Not only this, he further said that the work ethic of the Chinese superstar is one of the best things to look out for.
“It was a very intense two years, beautiful and learned a lot,” Riba said of Zheng. “From the beginning until today, we have always given our best effort and I have really enjoyed the journey we have created together. It is an honor to guide you, I’m so proud of you, your work ethic is one of the best I’ve seen in tennis.”
Thus, Riba, who joined hands with Zheng talked highly about the young superstar. While reflecting on the partnership that the two have, he also talked about why he loves to call the young sensation a ‘kid’.
