Quite a few WTA stars made coaching changes this year. The likes of Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff brought in new coaches to their camp and so did Naomi Osaka. However, when it comes to Emma Raducanu, her case is completely different. The British star has had as many as five different coaches in just two years after her maiden Grand Slam win at the US Open. Although she has settled with her childhood mentor Nick Cavaday now, she has often come under the scanner for making numerous changes to her coaching staff.
Raducanu and Cavaday joined forces earlier this year ahead of the 2024 Australian Open. While the Brit was making a comeback to tennis, it was important for her to have someone who knew her game inside-out. And, her childhood mentor was the perfect choice.
Talking about frequent changes in her coaching staff in a recent interview with independent.co.uk, Raducanu said, “It’s never really been my interest or philosophy to chop and change coaches. I’ve never really wanted that. I’m a very loyal person, whether that’s with my tennis or off the court. Or with what I eat. When I find something I like, I stick to it. I eat the same thing every single day. Same salmon every single day. I like those relationships and I think in the past, unfortunately, it hasn’t always worked like this.”

Raducanu began her career under Nigel Sears, but they parted ways following her Wimbledon fourth-round exit in 2021. Subsequently, the Briton won the US Open with Andrew Richardson by her side. However, they also split soon after, with Raducanu appointing Torben Beltz as her coach in November 2021. “I ask my coaches a lot of questions. On certain occasions, they haven’t been able to keep up with the questions I’ve asked and maybe that’s why it ended,” Raducanu once said about her frequent coaching changes.

Meanwhile, many tennis bigwigs have called out Raducanu for changing her coaches frequently. Among them is the renowned coach Patrick Mouratoglou.
When Serena Williams’ former coach criticized Emma Raducanu over her coaching fiasco
Stability is an important factor in sports. Be it individual or team sport, a stable environment is the key to success. However, when it comes to Raducanu, she has had frequent changes to her coaching team, which has significantly affected her performance after winning the US Open title in 2021. Serena Williams’ former coach Patrick Mouratoglou is certainly not a big fan of Raducanu making changes to her coaching staff frequently.

Mouratoglou previously said, “That’s not the ideal situation. If she was my daughter, I wouldn’t advise to do that, because you need stability to build something, whatever it is. And even more in tennis, I think it’s very important to have a project for your tennis and to follow day after day, the road to achieve what your project, your tennis project is. So whenever there are changes in terms of coaches, there are the project changes. So you cannot build something. And also you need stability. The tour is the most unstable thing on the planet. Everything changes every week. It’s pretty tough emotionally to handle all those changes.”
In the last year or so though, Raducanu seems to be settled with one coach. She will focus on getting the much-desired results next season and get back to her best. Do you think Raducanu can make a mark at the upcoming Australian Open?
