Last year’s US Open champion, Emma Raducanu, started 2022 with a demoralizing defeat at the Sydney International tournament. At the age of 18, Emma achieved great success when she won the US Open by defeating Leylah Fernandez in the final. However, since that glorious run, the young Brit (now 19) has struggled for consistency in her limited performances on the tour.

In the first round of Sydney International, Emma Raducanu lost to Elena Rybakina of Kazakstan by 6-0,6-1. However, she didn’t let defeat affect her, as she went straight to the practice court after the match to rectify her mistakes.
Speaking to the reporters after the match, Raducanu said, “I think I’ll brush this off. Yesterday was pretty much my 2nd time playing competitive points for 2 months. I’m confident that I can brush it off and keep going and keep working.”

This was Raducanu’s first match after over two months, a period which also saw her contract Covid-19. She needed some match practice before the Australian Open. Unfortunately, everything didn’t go according to plan for her, but she will hope for a better run at the Australian Open.

Meanwhile, Elena Rybakina is having quite a week in Australia as she reached the final of the Adelaide International where she lost to Ashleigh Barty. Now, she beat the winner of the last Grand Slam to move to the next round of Sydney International, where she will face Caroline Garcia of France.
The British player is already looking forward to the Australian Open
Raducanu, who is currently ranked 18 in the World, wants to learn from this defeat and push herself to achieve more. “I just want to keep putting myself out there. Even if I keep getting knocked down, it’s just about getting back up and basically falling in front. You’re one step better and you learn more. I’m just at the start of my first season. My goal is to not get too down or too high,” Raducanu stated.
