It was certainly not a good day for Elina Svitolina as she lost to Elise Mertens in the quarters of the WTA Melbourne 2. Although the World No.5 player played really well, she was not able to handle pressure in the final set. Mertens exhibited some great skills on the court and eventually earned herself a semi-final ticket. The final scoreline of the match was 3-6, 7-5, 6-7.

In the post-match presentation, Elina Svitolina faced a really difficult question. She was asked why she hadn’t managed a Grand Slam title despite being amongst the top few players in the rankings over the last couple of years, and what would she need to do in order to win one. With the Australian Open 2021 coming up in just a few days, the question seemed quite apt.

“It’s very very tough question,” began Svitolina. “I get that question quite a lot. For me, I think the most important is to be consistent, to get another chance to play the quarter-final, the semi-final. It’s all the time this kind of matches that you have to go through to win the title, you know those tough moments.”

It’s like a regular pattern for Svitolina where she manages to reach the quarterfinal and semifinal stages of tournaments but fails to handle the pressure there. The Ukrainian hasn’t played a Grand Slam final yet and will certainly want to change that sooner rather than later.

Svitolina continued that she would need to focus on every single game in order to win a Grand Slam title. She even admitted that she could have played better when she was in Grand Slam semifinals. However, she is hopeful that she will play better when she reaches another semifinal.

“Every match really matters. There is tough opponents who are there to give you a hard time. So, it’s very tough to say, to pick one thing what I have to improve because I’ve been in semi-finals and I wish I could play better that time. But, you know it didn’t happen. So, hopefully, I get a chance another time and will try to play better,” added the World No.5 player.
