Martina Navratilova has been one of the most inspirational tennis players in history. Playing at a time when women’s sports weren’t considered to be in the same category as men’s sports and during a time when homosexuality was not accepted. She played to change the world on both fronts. Her battles have inspired many.

However, Navratilova has also found inspiration throughout her life and continued to do so. She recently shared the story of a wheelchair tennis player who surpassed many odds to climb to a great spot.

Landon Sachs, 19, is a wheelchair tennis player who suffered through a tragedy of unspeakable dimensions to become a great prospect. When he was 8 years old, in February 2014, Sachs’ older brother, Ashton, for reasons still unknown, shot him and both of his parents. Brandon and Andra unfortunately passed from the injury, but Landon survived. 

However, he didn’t come out of the horrific event unscathed. He was left paralyzed from the waist down. Myles, Landon’s older brother, stepped up after the event and took care of his brother from that moment. Navratilova decided to share his story as it was covered by Tennis Channel in a video.

They shared a short video with the caption, “Paralyzed at age 8, he defied all odds to become one of the top collegiate wheelchair tennis players in the country.

Prior to the event, Landon was an athletic child and loved to play baseball and basketball. After the tragedy, Myles and Landon were always together, but the younger Sachs child would miss playing sports. In the fall of 2021, the dean of his school began an adaptive tennis program and suggested Landon take a shot at it. As fate would have it, it was exactly what he needed.

At 15 years old, when he began learning to play tennis in a wheelchair, Landon improved quickly. He picked up the sport as if he were a natural and is currently on a scholarship to play wheelchair tennis at the University of Arizona. The sport has changed everything for Landon, who is now aiming to play in the US Open.

“Don’t be too unwilling to try out a new sport. It can be daunting. It was for me. But once you try out a new sport, it will maybe change your future,” Landon told Tennis Channel as he continues to strive. He and Myles have never spoken about the tragedy that took place in their families, but they are aiming to change their lives day by day.
