The world of tennis occasionally experiences certain players who leave a mark that stays even after they retire from their professional careers. Tennis legend Serena Williams, among those, has had an amazing career studded with numerous achievements in the form of titles and records. While the legend is now retired and is focusing on her personal life, fans recently started comparing her feat to a young talent, who seems to be walking on the same steps.

Looking at the present tennis era, Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek has been holding a strong mark on the scoreboards lately. Along with clinching major titles every year, the young star has maintained her No.1 position for a while now. The tennis world, after witnessing the journeys of both the legendary player Serena Williams and the young star Iga Swiatek, is now on the line of running a comparison window for both tennis stars. As the young Polish player recently proved her worth to the fans by winning the WTA Finals title in Cancun along with maintaining her World No.1 spot for the year-end, the comparisons became quite obvious to follow.

Looking back to the year 2013, Serena Williams had an amazing year as she grabbed two Grand Slam titles by presenting excellent form on the court. Comparing the feat to what happened in 2022, Iga Swiatek proved to draw a similar line over Williams’ feat, as she gained amazing victories at both Roland Garros and the US Open, hitting a switch on to her era of dominance.

As the comparisons carried on to the subsequent years, 2014 saw Williams in a comparatively quieter mode as she was able to hit just one Slam. Tracing the performance to the present year, Iga Swiatek found herself in a similar scenario, as she also was able to win only one major title at Roland Garros.

As the comparisons moved forward to the next year where Serena Williams marked a remarkable year by capturing three Grand Slam titles and also made a run to the Calendar Year Grand Slam (CYGS), the eyes now look forward to what Iga will secure. However, does Swiatek really care about such comparisons?

Iga Swiatek’s lack of interest in comparisons from tennis history

Besides the comparisons that the fans carry out at their own ends, Iga Swiatek appears to be least interested in relying on such graphs. Earlier this year, after Swiatek won a match against Cristina Bucsa with a score of 6-4, 6-0, she shared her thoughts in a press conference.

“Honestly, I don’t even know these records. I play tennis, but I’m not really an expert in terms of statistics and history, so I’m not really focused on that. I’m kind of living in a different world, I feel. I never even played Serena or, you know, Monica Seles. So, yeah, I’m kind of living my own life and having my own journey,” Iga Swiatek mentioned.

By explaining her thoughts in such simple words, Iga Swiatek highlighted her focus on the present moment rather than looking back on past achievements or historic comparisons. The young star marked a unique perspective as she showed zero tolerance for records and statistics, choosing instead to make her way toward a successful career.
