In a world where gender comparisons are not uncommon, Karolina Muchova became the victim of an unacceptable statement. While creating history by defeating a former champion at the Slam, she garnered the spotlight—but not for her performance. Commentator Chris Evert’s remarks about Muchova’s playstyle sparked a storm on the internet. However, the Czech star has now spoken out on the matter, revealing where her focus lies.

Days after Chris Evert apologized for her controversial remark about Muchova, the Czech player broke her silence. Last Friday, Muchova faced Naomi Osaka in the second round of the ongoing US Open. Although she offered an impressive performance, defeating the former champion 6-3, 7(7)-6(5), her match drew attention for another reason—Chris Evert’s commentary! Evert, who was attending the game as ESPN’s commentator, faced backlash after comparing Muchova to male players. “She plays like a guy. She wants to play like a guy. The guys have bigger serves than the women, they have better volleys for the most part, they move a little bit better,” Evert said.

Now, in an interview, Muchova has revealed her feelings about Evert’s comment. When asked whether she modeled her game after men, the Czech player said, “I don’t think I play like a man. I don’t know what to say about that. I don’t really know what she said. But yes, I definitely take inspiration from Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic. I like to follow what they do. It inspires me. I don’t think I play that way. But, yes, I was not ready to comment on this matter.”

The Czech player initially remained silent, choosing to ignore the situation. Tunisian player Ons Jabeur, however, made a powerful statement, highlighting how “amazing talented player” Muchova is and urging everyone to “stop stereotyping based on gender.” After Jabeur’s tweet, Evert eventually apologized, saying, “I apologize if I offended you both, certainly not my intention. The power, mobility, and athleticism has improved so much, and many women I interview have men idols who they aspire to play like.”

While Evert’s comment brought disappointment among the fraternity, the Czech player impressed them by offering a humble and grounded response about taking inspiration from her childhood hero, Roger Federer.

Karolina Muchova wins hearts with her response to Nick Kyrgios’ question after victory

After Muchova won against Naomi Osaka, ESPN commentator and Aussie player Nick Kyrgios questioned the WTA star whether she sought any inspiration from her icon Federer for this match. In her response, Muchova said, “Yeah for sure. I watched him. I watched you.. all the guys doing these things and I really like it. So I try to put it in my game.” This response from the Czech player warmed Kyrgios’ heart, and he tweeted with delight, “Federer is a better role model than me!! But Thanks.”

Muchova’s humble response won over the internet, with followers praising her character. Despite Evert’s unacceptable statement, Muchova chose not to dwell on it and instead focused on the positive. She firmly expressed her disagreement but carefully chose not to disrespect Evert. Her response to Kyrgios also highlighted her humility. These qualities make Karolina Muchova an inspirational player.
