Iga Swiatek has returned to form and it is quite evident from her game in the 2023 WTA Finals. The former number 1 is on a conquest to earn back her ranking and is through to the tournament’s semifinals. After her third victory, she thanked her fans for coming to watch her. However, she couldn’t help but throw some shade at the conditions in Cancun.

Despite winning all three of her bouts, Swiatek has talked about the problems of the courts in Cancun before. She spoke about it after her first-round win, but she managed to put a positive spin on it. However, the quality of the courts continues to trouble her and this time she did not hold back from being blunt about it.

The Polish superstar managed to defeat Ons Jabeur in her third-round-robin match and will now move on to the semifinals. She has achieved two bagels and has not dropped a set in any matches. Her Tunisian opponent was beaten with the final score of 6-1, 6-2, and Swiatek was a happy camper. During her post-match presser, she decided to thank her fans but also gave a sly comment about the conditions of the tournament.

Yes, for sure. I should’ve mentioned you guys before, but, you know, Polish people are so loud I can’t always say a lot. I wanted to thank all the fans for coming. The conditions are so tough that without you, I don’t know if we’d find the motivation to play. So thank you for coming and cheering for us.”

While she looked delighted with the way crowd was cheering and enjoying the game, she did not resonate the same emotion for the playing conditions. Reflecting on the same, Swiatek candidly made a correlation between the motivation and the conditions; though, she believed that fans have been really the biggest motivator.

She further talked about the quality of the matches. Swiatek said, “I know these games aren’t the most beautiful, but we’re really trying our best to give you guys the best show possible. Thank you for coming & please come tomorrow & for the final as well.”

This is not the first time Swiatek has mentioned the problems. But the last time, she found a wholesome way to talk about the issue.

Swiatek’s mindset about the quality of the courts

Earlier though, in the middle of the negative press surrounding the Cancun courts, Iga Swiatek saw an opportunity to offer a different viewpoint. She acknowledged the difficulties but maintained a sense of community. She stated that, while obviously not a good thing, it doesn’t really matter in the end. She reasoned that because all players are playing on the same court and under the same conditions, the advantage is negated.

While even she faced difficulty, the Polish player attempted to put her best foot forward. And the unconditional support from the fans just happened to be her morale booster. This she appeared to be really grateful for. Now, as she moves on to face Aryna Sabalenka, the stadium is bound to be jam-packed and anticipation high. Nonetheless, who do you think will eventually crown the title?
