Elina Svitolina won her first match in the Dubai Championship against Mayar Sherif. After her surprise 3rd round exit from the Australian Open, Svitolina took her time and returned to the court well prepared. She spoke out at the press conference and said that she was having a 10-day training camp in Italy.
When asked about her future plans, the Ukrainian said, “Right now the most important thing for me is to play games, win every game every time I step on the pitch, try to improve day by day. I don’t have ranking goals, I don’t think about moving up three or four positions”
Elina was in the top 10 when she lost in Indian Wells last October. Her leg injury kept her out for a reminder of the season and she has dropped off 8 places to 15th in the WTA ranking. She returned at the start of the 2022 season at the Adelaide international but again lost in 1st rounds.

While commenting on the current WTA circuit, she was seemingly more encouraged by the competition. The 2019 US Open semi-finalist feels that the WTA circuit is wide open right now and everyone has become a very solid player.
The 27-year-old said, “Now most of the players have a great team behind them. That’s why I think women’s tennis is at its highest level”. Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka, Emma Raducanu, and other top 10 players have certainly proved this point well.
