When Serena started her journey, she came from a problematic neighborhood. The facilities were poor and so was her equipment. Later, when Serena climbed the ladder, her humility remained. The 41-year-old recently admitted that she never cared about changing the rackets until it was something huge. Here’s what she said.
Serena Williams never cared about changing her racket
When young tennis aspirant start their journey, they go for basic and cheaper equipment. Later with time, and after getting sponsors, they strive for quality. In tennis, there’s no bigger name than Serena Williams. While her team makes sure she uses the best rackets, the legend herself never cared about them.
Speaking about the same in the Wilson Tennis family dinner, the 41-year-old revealed that coming from a financially weaker background, she never had the luxury of going for quality equipment and that’s why changing the rackets is the least of her concerns.
“For me to notice a difference, it must be a real difference. I do the same string I’ve been doing since I can’t remember. I don’t know, I just don’t feel anything. Honestly, every time I try to feel something, I go back and say, Serena, you are from Compton. After all the things that we had to go through and then I think of the courts and I think of the dead balls and I just don’t feel anything,” Serena said.
She further added, “But when I do feel something, I always look at my hitter and coach and I’m like something is off. Because I’m feeling something way off.”
While there’s a lot of emphasis on the rackets and strings, the greatest tennis player in the sport cared very little about the quality of their equipment. It proves that the only thing important is the skill and dedication of a player.
