Italy’s Matteo Berrettini recently announced that he will take part in the 2021 edition of the Laver Cup. The tournament is scheduled to take place in September at the iconic TD Garden in Boston. Matteo will represent Team Europe and play alongside his teammates, Roger Federer, Dominic Thiem, and Bjorn Borg.
Welcoming him on board, Dominic Thiem shared a picture of Matteo’s announcement on his Instagram story, with the caption, “Welcome to #TeamEurope.”

The 25-year-old is surely an exciting addition to the star-studded line-up. He will walk into the tournament on the back of an incredible campaign at the 2021 Wimbledon Championship. Naturally, fans in Boston will expect a repeat of his performance on the grass.

“A really special experience”- Matteo Berrettini
This will be Matteo Berrettini’s first appearance at the indoor hard court event. Hence, he really looks forward to getting back in action alongside some of the biggest names in the sport.
“I’m really excited to be part of the Laver Cup this year. I’ve heard so much talk in the locker rooms from the guys that have played it before about what a cool event it is. Playing at TD Garden, having Bjorn Borg as my Captain, and being on the same team as one of my childhood idols, Roger Federer, is going to be a really special experience.,” he said.

It will be great to see his teammate, Dominic Thiem, back in action too. Earlier this year, Dominic suffered an injury at the ATP Mallorca event.
Because of the same, he missed out on the 2021 Wimbledon Championship. However, he looks forward to getting back on-court and playing alongside Matteo. Until then, he continues to stay in rehab, trying to speed his recovery and make it to the event in September.

Captain Bjorn Borg is thrilled to have the Wimbledon finalist on his team. He said, “Matteo has had an incredible run, not only on the grass courts this summer but really since the start of the year when he helped Italy reach the final of the ATP Cup in Melbourne and then reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and the quarter-finals at Roland Garros.”

This was one of his most successful campaigns. However, the World No. 8 faced Novak Djokovic in the finals of the 2021 Wimbledon Championship.

Matteo was far from favorite to win the game, but to everyone’s surprise, he made life extremely hard for Djokovic on-court. He announced his arrival in the final by winning the first set 7-6. However, he couldn’t keep up this form against the World No. 1 and eventually lost the game 7-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
