Does Jessica Pegula's emotional win prove that family is the backbone of every champion?

History has been created! Jessica Pegula is now going to play her first Grand Slam final. She defeated Karolina Muchova (CZE) by 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the SF on Thursday. What a comeback! She has now become the third woman, aged 30 or over, to make it through to the US Open final since Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams. Jessica Pegula thanked her family and friends during her post-match on-court interview. However, hilariously out of all the excitement, she forgot to mention her husband’s name during her speech.

I mean it’s amazing, I have my brother three, my sister there. On the screen was my dad, my brother-in-law, lots of friends, and lots of family all scattered around. Obviously my husband. Sorry, Sorry,” said Jessica Pegula. She further took a jab at her husband, Taylor Gahagen saying, “He’s not even standing up. He doesn’t want to be seen (laughs). But yeah I have so much family here and they’ve been watching a lot of my matches. So to still be here and have them still here supporting me is crazy.” She’s glad to share this moment with her friends and family members. Next up for her is Aryna Sabalenka!

Pegula is currently trailing by 2-5 in the H2H with the Belarusian tennis star. If we take a look at Jessica Pegula’s records this season, she has already won two titles in 2024. She’s in fact the fourth player in the Open Era to reach the finals in the Canadian Open, Cincinnati Masters, and the US Open. This depicts the form she has been in over the last few months. Interestingly JP has won 15 of her last 16 matches and the one match she lost, was to Sabalenka in Cincinnati. Revenge time?

American fans are keeping their fingers crossed! Jessica Pegula turned into a pro in 2009 and in between these 15 years, she has only managed to win 6 titles in her singles career. Before this, she has reached the QF of major tournaments six times in her career. However, she failed to move to SF on all five occasions. So, she has seen quite a few failures in her career, but the script is almost ready this time! How does it feel to make it to the finals of the US Open?

“It’s a childhood dream” – Jessica Pegula fulfills her dream in front of her family and friends

During her post-match interview, Jessica Pegula heaped praise on her opponent, Karolina Muchova, by mentioning how well she had started the match. She felt Muchova made her look like a “beginner.” Pegula revealed how embarrassing it was for her to see her opponent “destroy” her on the courts like that. She revealed that she was about to “burst into tears.” However, she’s now happy to pull things back on track just at the right time.

What’s your perspective on:

Does Jessica Pegula's emotional win prove that family is the backbone of every champion?

Have an interesting take?

It’s amazing. It’s a childhood dream. It’s what I wanted when I was a kid. It’s a lot of work, a lot of hard work put in. You couldn’t even imagine how much goes into it,” Pegula added. She also perhaps sent a little warning to her Belarusian opponent in the final by saying, “Obviously I come here to want to win the title.”

Sabalenka, on the other hand, has also mentioned that she doesn’t really care about who’s she going to face in the finals. Playing against an American on American soil is always challenging. Especially when the crowds start to go at you right from the get-go! However, she has already witnessed the same situation in last year’s final against Gauff, so we can expect her to come up with a better solutionthis time. The ‘Tiger’ is ready to roar! Do you think JP can come up with a strong challenge against the world number 2?
