Serena Williams‘ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, is among the best tennis coaches in the world today. Apart from imparting basic tennis skills to his wards, the Frenchman believes that it is also important for a coach to work on their mental part. Meanwhile, the latest Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka made a strange comment regarding the need for psychologists for tennis players. Although, Mouratoglou believes that people are interpreting it the wrong way. Here’s what happened.

Recently, the Australian Open 2023 champion, Aryna Sabalenka, made a claim that she does not need a psychologist and she is her own psychologist. Discussing the same, the renowned coach tried to explain the actual meaning behind the statement. Here’s what he said.

“When Sabalenka says she is her own psychologist, I think that what she meant working with a psychologist or a coach is not enough. By working with a psychologist, she probably identified where the problem was during the matches. Which was probably linked with how to control her emotion better. “

He further added, “When she says she is her own psychologist, I think she means once she steps in court in the competition, she took the decision to do this to do that or to stick to her goals. Maybe one of the goals is to control her emotions better. She was relying on a psychologist for that, and she was not doing it during the matches. It doesn’t mean that she is a psychologist. It means that she took a decision that paid off.”

Mouratoglou has always advocated the importance of mental health for tennis players. He recently spoke in detail about the coach’s role in grooming his wards mentally.

Patrick Mouratoglou gave the example of a tennis coach who wanted to change his client because he was not doing well mentally. However, Mouratoglou believes that helping the players with their mental toughness is part and parcel of a coaching role.

He further explained how it impacts performance. The Frenchman also claimed that, without working on the mental aspect of players, the coaching role has no value.
