Is Paula Badosa's apology genuine, or just damage control after being caught in controversy?

On the court, Paula Badosa has made a strong comeback in her recent tournaments this season. However, off the court, she’s still struggling to regain favor with tennis fans, especially those in China. Badosa has been caught up in controversies surrounding some of her social media posts. Recently, she fueled further outrage by deleting her recent responses and locking her X account. This move has sparked a wave of backlash, with many fans openly criticizing the Spanish superstar.

It all started with a social media post that was shared by her coach, Pol Toledo. That post included multiple pictures from their stay in Beijing during the China Open. In one of those pictures, Paula Badosa was spotted using chopsticks to pull back her eyelids. Fans claimed she did that, to imitate the facial features of East Asians. This picture caused a huge havoc among the masses and as a result, Toledo was later on forced to delete that picture from that post, but did it end the controversy?

No! Although Paula Badosa came up with an apology pleading her innocence in the whole incident, things looked far from getting over any soon. Then even just a few days ago, when Pol Toledo shared another picture of Paula Badosa waving toward the crowd, another controversy erupted from that post. How? Well, since Badosa announced that her season has come to an end due to an injury, Toledo wrote, “You truly deserve every success that comes your way. @paulabadosa.” Then in reply to that post, Badosa shared that post on her IG story saying, “Thank you for not posting a picture that gets me in trouble this time..

After hearing this, some of the fans felt the Spaniard was a bit rude in her apology and this comment was definitely not an appropriate statement after she made that ‘racist’ remark. Reflecting on her disappointments over these incidents, she said, “It’s really tiring to see constantly hate and criticism on this social media. I had an issue, yes. But after that, people and fans in China treated me amazing.” Talking about constant criticisms, well recently after having a brawl with some fans, some of the fans claim that Paula Badosa has now completely deleted her side of the argument which she posted through multiple posts on her X handle. Fans aren’t too pleased with this action too!

Paula Badosa yet again faces backlash from the fans for her recent off-court activities

Shortly after arriving in Beijing, we saw Paula Badosa saying hello in the Chinese language. She shared a few pictures on her IG account, captioning, “Ni hao,” which means “hi” or “hello” in Chinese. Who would know what would be lining up next up for in the next few days during that time? Speaking on what could’ve been a better solution for Paula Badosa after committing this alleged ‘blunder’ some of the fans claim, “It would’ve been so easy to just apologize and navigate the situation. But she just had to double down.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Paula Badosa's apology genuine, or just damage control after being caught in controversy?

Have an interesting take?

Although we saw Badosa issuing an apology after sparking the controversy surrounding her gesture with the chopsticks, she deleted that comment later on. In that comment, she wrote, “Oh no please don’t get it that way. Never thought it would get interpreted this way we weren’t even imitating Asian people. I was playing around with my face and wrinkles. I love Asia one of my favorite people and have plenty of Asian friends. They are the kindest.” She came up with another apology through a different tweet later, but till then the water has flown a long way!

Some of the fans elaborated, “The thing she did apologize, but it wasn’t sincere. She then bought it up again on her own accord and got dragged for it. She then told people to move on and she had already apologized. Gets dragged even more, and then locks her account. She doesn’t know when to shush. Most people moved on but SHE SPOKE ABOUT IT AGAIN and thought it was funny.” Clearly, the fan wasn’t too pleased jokingly thanking her coach for not putting her into troubled water further surrounding this incident.

Paula Badosa deleted her first comment in which she said, “I love Asia“, but what did she say in her next apology? In another post, she apologized for her actions saying, “Hey guys! Really sorry didn’t know this was offensive toward racism. My mistake. I take full responsibility. These mistakes will make me learn for next time. Hope you understand…. I love you all.

After seeing Badosa locking her account and deleting her recent comments, another fan explained the series of events in a few lines and concluded, “She’s (Badosa) not sorry for her racism, she’s sorry she got caught and annoyed that there was a backlash.”

Although, Paula Badosa has spoken about online hatred multiple times in the past. She once claimed, “If I had to pay attention to that (negativities), I wouldn’t sleep.” Looking at these series of reactions from her in the last few days, makes us think about her ability to handle these types of situations. Is there someone feeling bad looking at this tennis star in this type of situation? Well, a fan wrote, “I can’t feel bad for someone who not only gave a half-assed apology but then brought it up again after everyone stopped caring? If you’re gonna dig your own grave, people will push you into it- that’s just how that goes.

Recently, Paula Badosa was also spotted keeping the social media hate aside for a bit to cheer up her boyfriend Stefanos Tsitisispas at the Swiss Indoors tournament. With temperatures soaring high and high around her, it’s interesting to see how long can tackle all of these by just deleting comments. What do the fans think about her recent apologies? In reply, to this, a fan put up a question on X asking, “Did she really think that people were going to accept her apology when she wasn’t really sorry?” We’ve heard from a lot of fans on this, but what are your own thoughts on this controversial incident?
