Former American tennis star Chris Evert is among the boldest personalities in tennis. The 67-year-old actively covers tennis as a broadcaster and analyst. Apart from the game, she is also vocal about pressing social issues in the country. The recent arrest of American basketball star Brittney Griner also drew her attention.

Griner is serving a prison sentence in Russia, and in the past few days, we have seen sports personalities standing in support of her. Evert also joined the list with her recent post.

Chris Evert supports Brittney Griner

Back in February this year, customs officers in Russia found cannabis-derived oil in Brittney Griner’s airport luggage. Since Russia has harsh drug laws, the American is serving a nine-year prison sentence.

This has sparked the debate regarding the ignorance of the US government. Many prominent figures in the country raised their voice for the detained WNBA star. Chris Evert also showed her support by sharing a tweet from Sports journalist John Feinstein.

Further, she wrote, “That’s NOT OK….It’s a horrendous situation for Brittney and her family. She does not deserve this treatment, it’s a nightmare…”

The US government is in constant talks with its Russian counterparts to bring the WNBA star back home. With the pressure from elite athletes building now, it will be a tough fight to bring Griner back home.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion never fails to point out the negatives in society. She has remained vocal for equality and social justice. Apart from that, a noble quality of the former world number one is her honesty. The 67-year-old has always accepted the mistakes in her life.

In an old interview, the tennis legend revealed that she is very spiritual and a firm believer in the cycle of Karma. Karma basically means that a person has to face the consequences of their doings later in their life.
