American tennis legends Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova had one of the greatest rivalries in the sport. The ladies ruled the WTA tour in the 70s and 80s. Even though the on-court rivalry suggests otherwise, the two were really close friends. Over the years, professionally, they used to extract the best performance out of the other.

Apart from the head-to-head rivalry, the fight was also about the on paper records. While Evert started first and reached the landmarks early, Navratilova got up to pace later in her career and chased Evert’s records.
Chris Evert on Navratilova breaking her records
Acknowledging the abilities of her friend, the 67-year-old lauded Navratilova and said,
“I can’t say I was too happy. Obviously, I knew it was going to happen. I’m happy for Martina. She’s had a rough go, a rough year.”
Further, she said the records don’t concern her as much as it does to Navratilova.
“Records mean a little more to her than they do to me. . . She got another one of mine last year, most tournaments played,” she said.
While Evert thought Navratilova will surpass most of her records, she was sure about one record that no one can beat her.
“When Martina got this last one, I started thinking, ‘Let me see, do I have any more records she doesn’t have?’ Yes!–125 clay-court victories. I know she’s not going to break that one,” she added.
