But apart from her mind-blowing performance, Gauff’s one exclusive gesture stole the limelight. Calling her actions “the theme of the week”, she explained in the post-match press conference, how the gesture was originally copied from her colleague and United Cup teammate Denis Kudla.

Coco Gauff on diggin’ her way to the limelight in Australia

Spectators and fans beheld a strange sight unfolding in front of them post Gauff’s victories in the tournament. After her matches in the 2025 United Cup, she was often seen mimicking digging with a shovel. When asked about it, Gauff said, “Honestly, I think it started, like, in my match against China. I was playing (Zhang) Shuai, and she was playing really great tennis. You know, he (Kudla) was, like, great digging, keep digging. Then the shovel celebration came from him. I just kind of took it and ran with it. That was the theme of the week for me”.

What Gauff’s actions, words, and performance ultimately displayed was the deep camaraderie that the entirety of Team USA believed in throughout the week in Australia. While standout performances from individuals were, as always, par for the course, the positivity of the teammates and conviction of their loved ones carried them through to the win. Tennis may well be a singular sport, but the foundations that prop up the stars are built by many, many other unseen forces too. Team USA at the United Cup was an emblem of that perfect synergy.
