One of the major reasons was giving time to her family. In particular, to her five-year-old daughter Olympia. The five-year-old who is quite popular on social media now also has an interesting story behind her name.
Serena herself narrated the story behind the naming of her daughter.
Serena Williams speaks about her daughter’s name
Back in 2019, Serena Williams explained an interesting fact regarding her daughter’s name. Many of us don’t know that the first name of Olympia is Alexis. It’s also the first name of Serena’s husband and Olympia’s daughter Alexis Ohanian.
“Her name is Alexis Olympia. My husband’s name is Alexis and so I thought it will be cool if we had a junior and that was a female and it’s so cool and so her name is actually Alexis but I always call her Olympia and that’s like that means strong,” Serena said.
The former world number 1 further explained how her initials also coincidentally match with the Australian Open. “Eight months later I was like oh my god AO was like Australian Open. Which is all kind of weird because I found out I was pregnant in Australia at the Australian Open. I didn’t even mean to name her like have to initials, but it just so kind of happened,” she added.
Venus Williams reacts to Serena’s retirement
Serena’s elder sister Venus Williams reacted just like all of us when Serena hung her racket. She also said that retirement was unimaginable. Notably, the 42-year-old is still active, and she also hopes to get her sister’s service for practice in the coming days.
