In July 2022, Daria Kasatkina set the tennis world ablaze when she posted photos with figure skater Natalia Zabiiako on Instagram. The couple who had been dating since 2021, finally made their relationship public. In March this year, we also saw the two have an adorable exchange during the Miami Open. With all that said, there have been questions about Zabiiako’s marital status prior to her involvement with Kasatkina.

Kasatkina and Zabiiako celebrated two years of being together last year in October. But before, that Zabiiako was married to movie director Danil Grinkin.

Daria Kasatkina’s girlfriend reveals why her earlier marriage did not work out

The 29-year-old Natalia Zabiiako was married to director Danil Grinkin for a brief period before her relationship with Daria Kasatkina. The couple had originally scheduled their August 2020 wedding. But the coronavirus pandemic forced a postponement. During this time, she also starred in a movie, titled, Unbroken, alongside fellow skater Alexandr Enbert, in Grinkin’s debut project. However, early in 2022, Grinkin and Zabiiako made the decision to divorce.

Although people might think it was mainly due to her coming out gay later on, but that is not the case. “Even if I was straight, I would end up getting divorced. There are many reasons, but rigidly patriarchal family life this is not for me. I had to support him, send all my energy to the family future,” Natalia Zabiiako stated in an interview in 2022.

Zabiiako revealed in an interview how she had to support him and claimed that Grinkin sidelined her career. During 2020, Zabiiako wanted to skate on a show, but Grinkin had a different perspective. When asked whether she was forbidden to do shows, she replied, “Like: your time of stardom has passed, well done, now is my time and you must elevate me. However, he did not earn at all. And what I have earned in my career is not unlimited.”

Eventually they separated, and her relationship with the Russian tennis player has gained much attention since then. In March, after her second round defeat to Romanian Sorana Cîrstea, Kasatkina appeared on the Tennis Channel and was later joined by her girlfriend Zabiiako. Kasatkina was heard asking the skater, “Do you know how they call these two Masters, IW and Miami?” Unaware about the early spring reference, Kasatkina explained it to her by saying, “Sunshine Double,” before adorably saying, “Do you know what is also Sunshine Double? Me and you.” 

Back in Feb 2023, Kasatkina even invited Zabiiako to a tennis training session in Dubai. But does Kasatkina skate with her girlfriend in return? Nope!

“I am zero figure skater,” the World No. 14 joked at the WTA Finals in 2022. “I mean, I like to skate, but she has to always carry me or else I will fall. I’m trying hard to learn how to do it, but I just cannot!”

Since then their relationship has only grown, especially as their social media appearances have made them even more fan- favorites!
