At the mere age of 17, the American tennis player Shelby Rogers won the girls’ national championship. Since then, the former world No. 30 player has squared off with a number of top competitors in the tennis community. The tennis player has won two doubles and six singles titles on the International Tennis Federation Women’s circuit. Moreover, the players’ most notable achievement was reaching the quarterfinals of the 2016 French Open and 2020 US Open.
However, it was her match against the WTA legend Serena Williams that previously stunned the entire sporting realm. In a three-set thriller, the 30-year-old tennis star outclassed the ‘Queen of the Court’ in the quarter-finals of the Top Seed Open. During her stellar journey, Shelby Rogers has only squared off once with her compatriot, Serena Williams. However, it perhaps turned out to be the greatest moment of her career as she defeated the American tennis legend, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6, in a thrilling matchup at the Top Seed Open Quarterfinals in 2020.
Shelby Rogers was recently asked about her remarkable triumph during her appearance at the Sports Spectrum podcast show. She said, “You know when you sit on a plane and there’s someone next to you, and they always ask you kind of you know what do you do where you go and this and that. And if they find out that I’m a tennis player, if I would get that part of the conversation, they always say, oh, have you played Serena?”
The 30-year-old American tennis player further stated that irrespective of winning or losing, the fact that she played against the 23-time Grand Slam Champion was something she could harp about for the rest of her life.
After finally playing against the former tennis ace, Rogers stated that she could now blow her own trumpet. She said, “And for the longest time it was No, I’ve never played her like she’s a great person I talked to in the locker room. She is so encouraging, inspiring, but I’ve never played her and so now like I had won or lost just the fact that I played or I’m like, Okay, now I can actually say that I have.”
Rogers squared off with Williams behind closed doors
The outdoor hard court event in Nicholasville was held behind closed doors as no fans were allowed to enter the stadium during the coronavirus pandemic. Speaking about the atmosphere, Rogers previously revealed that it was “kind of weird” for all the participants to compete in the empty stadiums of the Top Seed Open.
