The sisters that revolutionized women’s tennis — Serena Williams and Venus Williams — kept each other company on the tennis court for over two decades. Be it against each other in singles or playing together in doubles, they always had each other on the court. But after Serena decided to hang up her racket, Venus embarked on a solitary journey. She wished Serena was there for her, at least as part of the audience. When Venus won the first round at the Cincinnati Masters, she first talked about Serena and her joy.

The elder Williams sisters said her little sibling would have cherished the win had she attended the match live. Serena could not attend Venus’ US Open match, too, and the latter revealed how it felt to not have her sister with her. Though the 7-time Grand Slam champion loves New York, the city did not feel the same without her sister.

If there is one thing that the Williams sisters’ mother, Oracene Price, preached to their daughters, it is to stick to each other irrespective of their on-court rivalry. The legendary sisters are following these words like the holy bible.

The 2-time US Open champion uploaded a video on her YouTube channel to share her experience at Flushing Meadows. In the video titled ‘Here’s my US OPEN TENNIS 2023 experience’, the former World No.1 expressed how terrible it is not to have Serena on the court and how much Venus misses her.

The champion said that only her sister’s presence can make New York better. She expressed, “I love being here. The only thing that could be better is if Serena was here. I miss her so much, so I’m gonna play for both of us.” Serena’s absence appears not to work for Venus professionally as an eerie coincidence takes center stage.

2017 marked the last best year of Venus, and she is yet to make a comeback or equal the run. When the 5 times Wimbledon Championships winner made it to the US Open semi-finals, Serena was away from the court as she gave birth to her first daughter Olympia. In the absence of her sister, Venus came a cropper in the last four.

Cut to 2023, the 43-year-old, in the absence of her sister, lost in the first round of her home Slam. Serena is now away from the court due to the recent birth of her second daughter, Adira River.

In the post-match conference after the first-round exit in 2023, Venus talked about Serena’s absence. She appeared to have made peace with the fact that the 23-time Grand Slam champion is far away from playing professional tennis.

But it is easier said than done. Getting used to the absence of a sister with whom Venus spent over 22 years, half her life, on the court requires more time to accept and adapt to the situation.
