The French Open this year witnessed one of the matches of the year. Iga Swiatek, who came into the tournament as the defending champion faced a tough task of Naomi Osaka in the second round. What looked like to be a promising encounter delivered right in the spot and the match was nothing short of an exception. With both players refusing to give up, it was the Polish player who had the final laugh, leaving Osaka in absolute tears. However, Osaka, in response to her defeat suggested that she would love to face her on hard court, which was typically ‘her court’.

While the match is a long time gone, Coco Gauff still could not seem to get enough of the fascinating encounter. Having played against both superstars during her prime, Coco weighed her 2 cents on the interesting encounters as she was quick to pick her clear favorite among the two. While suggesting that the clay is near to an end this year, she would vouch for Naomi Osaka who made a stunning comeback to the sport after pregnancy.

“Iga on clay is very difficult on any surface but you know, especially clay is very difficult to play and Naomi um, I’ve played her I think I’ve only played her exclusively on hard. I would say that’s her best surface and yeah I played her right at the year defending Champion when she was defending Australian Open so I played both of them um at strong points in their career but I think it’s very cool um to see like, especially for Naomi like coming back and I know you know clay is somewhere maybe not anymore at the end of this tournament but with somewhere in the past that probably was a difficult spot for her um and you know I always root for her and I think you know also coming back from motherhood and for her to put up a level like that again Swiatek is great and um it’s good for women’s tennis to you know see,” said Gauff in the post-match interview at the French Open.

Thus, Coco Gauff extended her support to Noami Osaka as she suggested that it is great for tennis to see her making her comeback from the sport. However, while the former world number 1’s comeback is celebrated by Gauff, it has also put her US Open title chances into trouble.

After Naomi Osaka faced an unfortunate exit, she suggested that she would wait for Iga on hard courts, which are typically her courts. However, this has not proved to be a major threat for the defending US Open champion. The biggest title on hard courts will now have some serious contention from Naomi Osaka as well.

Thus, Coco Gauff will now have to work even harder if she aims to defend her title at the US Open. Not only Osaka, but Aryna Sabalenka, who won the Australian Open this year will also be another title contender coming into the hard courts. Thus, despite siding ways with Naomi for her immense work ethic, Coco Gauff will have no favor from her when the hard court season goes underway. Do you think Gauff will be able to defend her title at the US Open? Do let us know in the comments below!
