Coco Gauff’s admiration for Serena Williams is quite evident! Well, the whole tennis world is aware of how she wants to follow the 42-year-old American legend’s legacy on the court. But recently, a false incident regarding the 19-year-old and Serena Williams started doing rounds on social media, with none of them involved.

As the Australian Open is going on, just before the tournament, the fourth-ranked tennis player’s kit gave fans Serena Williams vibes. But do you know that was never the case with the kit or with Gauff? She recently clarified her take in detail and talked about the false tweet that talked about the kit’s other way-around inspiration.

This all started when the 19-year-old’s kit bag for the Australian Open came to light. While it shared a resemblance to the 23-time Grand Slam champion’s kit bag, it was something the US Open champion didn’t really have in mind. Recently, in a press conference, after winning her first round, Gauff openly declared that the kit was not an homage to her idol and that she never had that thought in her mind.

Gauff said, “Yes. So I saw that tweet, and that account is going to be happy they are being mentioned — but I saw that tweet and then I texted my agent. I was, like, I don’t remember ever saying this. Then the person replied or something and it was, like, a fake tweet. Their account said don’t take things seriously. Then I realized it was fake.”

Apparently, a tweet on her behalf started going viral in which she talked about how it was great to pay homage to Williams. While she clearly denied it, she also appreciated the American tennis legend’s fashion game on and off the tennis court. But at the same time, she was surprised by how things went around on the internet.

She added, “I love Serena, and I think she has the best fashion game on the court and off the court and everything. So, yeah, it wasn’t an homage to her, but it was funny how that tweet kind of circulated.” But do you know that even after praising and applauding Serena Williams’ legacy on the tennis court, there was a time when she highlighted how she was disinterested in copying her idol?

Gauff is disinterested in copying Serena Williams

A few months ago, in an exclusive interview with ‘People’, the young tennis sensation opened up about how she wants to be herself and not try to be exactly like her idol. She stated, “I don’t think anybody will [take Serena’s mantle] because she’s just one of a kind. But I will try my best to be the best Coco.”

Along with that, she clearly stated that the 42-year-old American tennis legend is the GOAT, without any doubt. In addition, she also claimed that she is one of a kind and that no one can take her stand in the tennis world. So rather than focusing on being the next Serena Williams, she is focusing on being herself and creating a name as Coco.
