The year 1997 saw Venus Williams making her debut on the grass courts at Wimbledon Championships. Although her first outing didn’t go in her favor, losing in the opening round, Venus gave a good account of herself at one of the biggest tennis tournaments of the season. Exactly 26 years later now, the elder Williams sister has gone on to become one of the greatest players to have played in the tournament.
During her illustrious career, the 43-year-old has managed to win five Wimbledon singles titles. Additionally, she also has six women’s doubles titles at the tournament, partnering her younger sister, Serena Williams. Recently, fellow American tennis icon, Tracy, Austin, highlighted how Venus has become one of the Wimbledon GOATs.

The 60-year-old former World Number 1 tennis player was all praise for Venus as she highlighted her peculiar qualities that made the five-time Wimbledon champion so successful at the tournament. Talking about this, Austin said, “So what’s made Venus so successful at Wimbledon? It all starts with the serve. A great serve, one that could regularly top 115 – 120 mph.”
Subsequently, the 1979 and 1981 US Open champion also went on to talk about Venus’ game-changing quality that she had never seen in any other player before her. Praising the elder Williams sister on this, Austin added, “But she also changed the game. The first player who could hit offensively from a defensive position. And if she gets a short ball, watch out! Venus was coming to the net instantly and would take charge of the rally.”

Earlier this week, the former World Number One’s campaign at the ongoing Wimbledon Championships ended early as she lost to Elina Svitolina in the opening round. In a match lasting just over an hour and a half, Svitolina got the better of her American opponent in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
With this, Williams’ brief comeback during the grass-court season came to a disappointing end. She managed to win just a solitary game while losing three of her matches.
