Venus Williams’ comeback hasn’t gone exactly according to her plans. After being out for close to a year, the seven-time Grand Slam champion made a return to the sport in August last year. However, she failed to win any of her matches in the four tournaments played last season. Further, Venus didn’t play any event last year after the 2022 US Open, instead deciding to take a break.
Like the previous season, the elder Williams sister’s campaign this year has been a massive disappointment. Having played just four tournaments to date in 2023, the former World Number 1 has managed to win just two of her matches. What’s more, she even had a disastrous outing at the ongoing Wimbledon Championships, losing in the opening round against fellow wildcard Elina Svitolina. However, her fans have something to cheer about with the latest announcement.

The Canadian Open is one of the rare tournaments which Venus hasn’t been able to win during her illustrious career. Her best result here came in 2014 when she reached the final of the tournament, losing against Polish star Agnieszka Radwanska in the summit clash.
Venus’ disappointing Wimbledon campaign
Earlier last week, the five-time Wimbledon champion wasn’t able to replicate her past performances on the grass courts of Wimbledon. The 43-year-old went down against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.

In a match lasting an hour and 32 minutes on Wimbledon centre court, Venus’ errors proved costly as she made as many as eight double faults and 33 unforced errors. On the other hand, Svitolina had no double faults and just 15 unforced errors. With a chance to sparkle at Wimbledon gone, Venus will be hoping to dig deep at the National Bank Open.
