Victoria Azarenka, the Belarusian tennis star, faced a wave of disapproval from the crowd as she was booed off the center court following her round of 16 defeat to Elina Svitolina. The reason behind the spectators’ negative reaction was Azarenka not shaking hands with her Ukrainian opponent at the end of the match. But, it was due to Svitolina’s stand on not partaking in any pre or post-match handshakes with Russian and Belarusian opponents. After days of silence, Victoria has finally spoken up after all the Wimbledon drama she had to face through social media.
However, Victoria and Elina showed their mutual respect for each other by raising hands towards one another and showing how much they value the game and, of course, the sportsmanship. But the audience refrained from understanding this and continued to question Victoria’s integrity and ethics.

She wrote, “Took a few days to digest the last few weeks. There is a lot I could say, but the feeling and thought I keep having is, when something great happens to us we usually have gratitude and say thank you. When something unpleasant happens to us we ask why and usually the thank you comes later when we see the reason why after the fact. Whatever happens, happens for a reason (I really believe that) And I want to say thank you and I’ll continue being grateful for the experiences.”
