Gauff is in the midst of a beautiful stint in Australia. In her last five matches, she has only dropped one set and bageled two of her opponents. The 19-year-old sat down for the post-match presser after her current win against Marta Kostyuk and was asked about the deal between Rafael Nadal and the Saudi Tennis Federation. Gauff said she had already seen embers of a possible move when the rumor of the WTA Finals scheduling in Saudi Arabia started flying.

She continued, “I feel like if we go there, I feel like we have the opportunity to make change. Hopefully, you know, I know the situation there isn’t great. Definitely don’t support the situation there, but I hope that if we do decide to go there, I hope that we’re able to make change there and improve the quality there and engage in the local communities and make a difference.”
Although the WTA has not yet decided on Saudi Arabia, Gauff has expressed her belief that players should have a greater say in the decision-making process. There isn’t clarity over whether they have the final say in the decision-making process, but the WTA is making more effort to involve players, as per Gauff.
The WTA Finals had many rumors of moving to Saudi Arabia in 2023, and they have continued this year as well. While a final decision hasn’t been announced, there does seem to be some weight to the information. The Public Investment Fund has expressed interest in both sides of tennis, and the news will become clear as the year continues. What do you think? Will tennis find a new location in the Middle East?
