Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic surprised most people by winning the Wimbledon Championships this year. With names like the world no.1 Iga Swiatek and the defending champion Elena Rybakina floating around as the favorites, very few people gave a chance to the highly talented Czech. But it was Vondrousova who won the tournament at the end, playing some excellent tennis. She thrived on the underdog tag and won the tournament in some style. She recently sat down for an interview to talk about her remarkable victory.
The 24-year-old had previously reached the finals of the French Open in 2019 and has also won the silver medal in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Her illustrious career now got more decorated after winning the grandest tournament in all of tennis history, the Wimbledon Championships.
Marketa Vondrousova says no one can take her grand slam win away from her

Vondrousova doesn’t seem to be content with winning just one grand slam. She is ambitious and won’t settle for less. Vondrousova has said winning one grand slam is a significant achievement and no one can take that away from her. She is a lot calmer now, but that won’t stop her from pursuing even more slam victories.
She said during her interview with PuntodeBreak, “If you have a Grand Slam title, no one can take it from you anymore. You’re a little calmer because you know you already have it, although I feel like everyone wants more later, they go for the second one. That will be my goal from now on”.
Vondrousova will also be happy as she has broken into the top 10 of the WTA rankings for the first time.
Vondrousova achieves a career-high ranking

For the first time in her glittering career, Vondrousova has reached the top 10 after her Wimbledon success. Vondrousova has surmised that now she was the Wimbledon champion and also given the fact that she is in the top 10, the other players would want to stop her and defeat her. She feels it would be like having a target on her back. But at the same time, she welcomes such pressure.
Vondrousova said, “I am already in the top 10, so I feel that everyone is going to watch me. I think the girls will now want to beat me, it will be like having a target on the back, although I think it is good to have this.”

Vondrousova is the first unseeded player to win Wimbledon. It is amazing how well Vondrousova adapted well to the grass, a surface where she herself didn’t believe she would have success. But due to sheer hard work and commitment, she ended up lifting the Venus Rosewater dish.
