When fans saw Ons Jabeur’s latest Instagram stories, grooving to Enrique Iglesias’ tunes during a concert, they wouldn’t have anticipated that after a fun-filled day, they would be receiving devastating news from the Tunisian star. However, it did happen! Jabeur has announced her withdrawal from the remainder of the season. She has taken a few steps back to recover and come back stronger. But how did it come to this heart-breaking decision?

Everyone thought that this year the Tunisian tennis star would certainly take away the Wimbledon Championships, after being stuck with the runner-up trophy for two consecutive years (2022, 2023). However, things went downhill for the World No. 22 as she made an early exit at the Grass court slam. Jabeur then aimed to leave her mark in the American hardcourt swing, but she had to withdraw from the US Open, due to a shoulder injury. Before that, she suffered a first-round exit at the Canadian Open.

However, now the Tunisian star is done for the season itself, because of the shoulder injury. Jabeur updated her followers through a post on X, detailing the reason behind her decision. She wrote, “This year has been extremely hard for me, and as athletes we know that recovery is part of the journey. Due to my ongoing shoulder injury, my medical team and I’ve made the difficult decision to step off the tennis circuit for the rest of the reason.”

Though she won’t be active on the court, Jabeur will be working hard on her fitness. In the post shared, the Tunisian star revealed her off-the-court recovery plans. She wrote, “While I’m taking time to heal, I’ll be dedicating myself to charity work and ensuring that we make a real difference in the world. Thank you for all the support, and I can’t wait to come back stronger!” Moreover, the World No.22 announced her comeback side by side as well, “I will see you back on the court in Australia in 2025.”

While Jabeur has achieved enormous success on the court, she also untiringly works to be the best role model for the younger generation in Tunisia and around the world.

Ons Jabeur on “showing the way” to the younger generation in Tunisia

Ons Jabeur battled all the odds to rise to great heights as a tennis player from an African nation. The former World No.2 has become a beacon of hope for the younger generation of her country, as she became the first African-Arab woman to reach a Grand Slam final in the Open era.

When asked what advice she would like to give to the young players looking up to her, Jabeur said, “Hope I am doing it well, to be honest. I tried to give the best example on and off the court. I wish to see my dream to see more and more players hopefully from Tunisia, from Africa because I feel like we have amazing talent. They need someone to show them the way. Obviously, I understand I come from a country that may not many gave me the advice and probably if I look back I would do things differently. But those things that I did also made me stronger.”

The fans will be eagerly waiting for Jabeur’s comeback next season, but even when the Tunisian is away from action for the remainder of the ongoing season, she will continue to be an inspiring figure off the court and will give back to society in whatever way she can. Certainly a remarkable role model! Don’t you think so?
