Could Olympia Williams surpass her mom's legacy, or is it too soon to tell?

Serena Williams is thriving in her role as a hands-on mom. After announcing her retirement from professional tennis in September 2022, she expressed that she was evolving away from the sport. Since then, Serena has embraced this new chapter by sharing her lifestyle and business ventures with her fans. For instance, her new makeup line, WYN Beauty, emphasizes empowerment and inclusivity. After smashing records and swiping titles in her years on the court, the idea of this former WTA leading a “normal life” comes off as a surprise. However, the competitive spirit runs deep in the Williams family.

While speaking with Essence magazine, Serena spoke of her schedule as a mother. Expressing just how chaotic it is. In between working around her one-year-old daughter, Adira’s nap times, she’s also picking out carpet samples for her waterfront home in Jupiter. In the meantime, she’s formed a strong bond with her daughter, Olympia. And when it comes to tennis, the seven-year-old is shining brightly and embodying the legacy of excellence that Serena has established.

“Olympia’s really good at it,” she stated. Which is huge coming from the record-holder for most Grand Slam titles. And it’s not just motherly love that’s making her say it, her sister, Venus Williams can attest to that! “She’s natural, and I wasn’t natural. I look at Olympia, and Venus looks at her, and it’s like, this girl has more athlete in her than the both of us combined,” she added.

Alongside Venus, who is on a sabbatical due to on-court injuries, the two sisters need no introduction. While Serena Williams is still upheld as the standard to beat, Venus has 7 Grand Slam titles and 4 Olympic gold medals to her name. Their athletic spirit is incomparable, which sets the bar quite high. Should Olympia ever consider a future in the sport, she’ll have two of the best to advise her along the way.

“I think about my confidence,” Williams added, “and where it comes from. And I’m like, Yeah, it came from being an athlete, being active. You had to really believe in yourself. Because no one else believed in me. No one else was rooting for me—not in the beginning. It was super important for me to have that confidence in myself, or I would’ve never been able to win.”

Rest assured that her daughter is well on her way to something big. Although, “choose a career” may not be on the to-do list just yet. She’s quite invested in tennis and other physical activities.

Olympia shares the sporty spirit like her mother

On October 13, Serena Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, took their daughter Olympia to the thrilling 2024 Gold Over America Tour, where they cheered on gymnastics superstar Simone Biles at the Kia Center in Florida. The family had a blast soaking up the excitement and even got the chance for a meet-and-greet with Simone after the show.
