The subject of Danielle Collins’ looming retirement has once again caused a stir in the tennis community! However this time it is not Collins who has expressed her views, but rather renowned journalist Christopher Clarey. He expressed his doubts over the 30-year-old player’s decision to retire after such a fantastic year.

During the latest episode of the Tennis Channel Inside-In Podcast, the host Mitch Michals engaged in a conversation with the renowned tennis journalist. While discussing the current forms of Collins, Michals asked Clarey about the subject of Collins’ retirement. As Clarey delved into the topic, he expressed his skepticism on the whole matter, much like the rest of the world after the American’s performance so far this year.

“I can’t help but be a little skeptical that she is having this wonderful season. If she goes and wins the US Open and has this great top three year, she really won’t wanna shut it down…the Australian Open coming up. I believe her but part of me is journalistically and historically is a little skeptical.”

He added, “There are so many comebacks in tennis….anything is possible.” Danielle Collins, after suffering from endometriosis and rheumatoid arthritis, announced earlier this season about her retirement as she wants to start a family. However, soon after this, the American player has been rapidly climbing the stairs of success. After successfully clinching the Miami Open and Charleston Open titles, Collins has recently reached the world number 12 ranking. But her decision to retire did not waver even after that.

But, as Clarey pointed out, there have been several similar instances of comebacks in the past. Among them, one notable incident involves Caroline Wozniacki, who quit tennis back in 2020 to start a family with her husband. And after having two children, she came back to play once again last year. But according to Collins, she has her goal clear. And when asked about her retirement, she previously said, “Let me retire and have a family in peace!” Not only that, she also revealed her post-retirement plans recently.

Danielle Collins wants to train for a marathon!

The former World No. 7 is currently enjoying her last season on tour. And with two titles this season, Collins is going away from tennis with a bang, like she always wanted. But, what will be the four-time title winner’s next goal? Well, it involves another sport.

“I’ve always enjoyed running… I haven’t gotten to do as much of it because my training doesn’t typically include a lot of long-distance running. But I’m training for a marathon at the end of the year,” Danielle Collins stated in an interview.

However, right now her focus is on the upcoming French Open, where she will face Caroline Dolehide. While she progresses in the season, one thing is certain. Whether she changes her decision on returning or not, Danielle Collins’ exceptional performance this season will be remembered by us all.
