Bianca Andreescu created shockwaves across the tennis world by becoming the first-ever grand slam singles champion from Canada at her US Open debut in 2019, as a 19-year-old. She proved her mettle on the grand stage by overcoming the legendary Serena Williams in straight sets in the finals. Although she couldn’t back up her dream run at the US Open in the following years with more championships, the calm and focused Canadian still remains one of the most promising stars in the WTA tour today.?

A composed Andreescu is not generally known for her on-court outbursts or temper tantrums. However, the 23-year-old star was pushed to her limits during a match at the ongoing Bad Homburg Open.

The maiden grand slam winner is continuing with her Wimbledon preparations by participating in the tune-up grass-court tournaments ahead of the big event slated to begin on July 3. After a disappointing display at the bett1Open Championships in Berlin where he was defeated in the first round by Marketa Vondrousova, she set her eyes on the Bad Homburg Open.

In an unexpected unfolding of events, Andreescu got involved in a verbal spat with the chair umpire during her first-round match against British wildcard Sonay Kartal at the event. Fifth-seed Andreescu was leading 4-2 in the deciding set and down 15-30 on serve in the 7th game when a line call by the chair umpire didn’t go in favor of the Canadian. Andreescu was quick to voice her displeasure – “There have been so many calls that were so bad”, she was heard yelling.

To Andreescu’s relief, she finally overcame a stern challenge from Kartal as she won the match 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 to book a place in the second round where she will be facing Rebeka Masarova of Spain. The line call dispute, however, further raised questions on the need to implement electronic line calling in all tournaments.

Electronic line calling the new way forward??

No matter how much we try, the possibility of human error always remains in case of judgments and line calls by the linesmen or chair umpires. These controversial decisions are especially seen during the clay-court season as hawk-eye is not used in tournaments played on clay. But there are also many other tournaments where the hawk-eye technology isn’t used. This has naturally strengthened demands for the implementation of live electronic line calling technology, which all tournaments on the ATP tour will be incorporating from 2025.
