The year 2022 has been a roller coaster ride for tennis fans worldwide. We have witnessed the heartfelt goodbyes of two legends of the sport while also witnessing the growth of new tennis stars. Adding to the list of exciting talents coming to the fore is Linda Fruhvirtova. The young Czech star, at just 17, has won her maiden WTA single titles at Chennai Open 2022. Subsequently, she has broken a record previously held by Coco Gauff.
The 2022 Chennai Open marks the return of a WTA tournament to India for the first time since 2008. Linda Fruhvirtova defeated Magda Linette, 4–6, 6–3, 6–4, to win her first WTA singles title.

The Czech star surpasses Coco Gauff
At 2019 Linz Open, Cori ‘Coco’ Dionne Gauff won her first WTA Tour singles title, aged 15 marking her as the youngest singles-title holder. Coco Gauff defeated Jeļena Ostapenko in the final to become the youngest WTA player to win a singles title. On Sunday, at Chennai, Fruhvirtova also won her maiden title, and has now become the youngest player to be ranked in the top 100.
“I was feeling good in my game, and I knew that I could do a good result here, but it was much better than we all probably expected,” she stressed when asked about her match. In front of a packed Chennai crowd, 17-year-old Fruhvirtova defeated the third seed from Poland. With this incredible win, Linda Fruhvirtova broke into the top 75 in the WTA ranking.
