Hailing from a lineage of both athletes and activists, Corey Gauff was the primary influence on her athletic pursuits. However, it was her grandmother who influenced the activist side of Coco’s personality, since she is a trailblazer in her own right. In a touching Mother’s Day post, Gauff’s mother acknowledged the 20-year-old player’s grandma on social media, praising her for being a source of strength.

Candi Gauff took to her Instagram account to commemorate Mother’s Day with a touching collage featuring her own mother. She wrote a loving note next to the pictures, saying, “Happy Mother’s Day Yvonne Odom! I love you!!! You are LIVING your BEST life. Keep smiling and bringing sunshine!”

Gauff shares a special equation with her grandmother in terms of her activism, off the court. Last year, after the US Open, the Grand Slam champion opened up about how her grandmother was the first black person to attend an all-white high school and breaking segregation barriers at public schools in Delray Beach, Florida.

Coco Gauff stated, “You know, for those who don’t know, she was the first black person to go to, it was then called Seacrest High School. She was chosen to integrate that high school, and she had to deal with a lot of stuff.” The third-ranked tennis player in the world said that her grandma was the inspiration for her choice to use her platform to raise significant social issues.

Following that, the 20-year-old acknowledged the influence and motivation she has received from her grandmother’s activism, which has strengthened her resolve to advocate for change and have a significant impact off the tennis field. She added, “Yeah, I think she’s probably “the” sole or one of the main reasons why I use my platform the way that I do and why I feel so comfortable speaking out.” 

Gauff’s grandmother was in attendance at last year’s Billie Jean King Cup, showing her unwavering support for the WTA star as she represented the United States. The 20-year-old also shared an emotional tribute for her, acknowledging her gratitude to her family.

Gauff was asked about her grandmother Yvonne Lee Odom, who was always encouraging and powerful, during an on-court interview. She stated, “Yeah, my grandmother. Grandparents in general just mean a lot to me. I know a lot of you probably know what my grandmother or grandfather has done for this community regarding racial justice, equality, and equality in general.”

The 20-year-old athlete conveyed her appreciation for coming from a family that has continuously done good deeds for the neighborhood. She recognized the significance of her family’s ideals and their active participation in societal efforts when she thought back on her childhood.
