Coco Gauff‘s disappointing defeat at Roland Garros has ignited new discussions of an iconic parallel. The young American’s semi-final loss against Iga Swiatek was widely predicted. Gauff’s score against the Pole continues to worsen and therefore the fans are drawing their rivalry parallel to that of Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova. While the Pole added another number to her lead with 11 wins over Gauff’s solitary victory in 12 meetings, some couldn’t help but sympathize with Sharapova during those days of facing Williams’ domination.

Soon after the final results of Coco Gauff’s defeat were noted, a post on X compared the scenario to the tennis legends Serena and Sharapova. “Is this how die-hard Maria Sharapova fans felt for over a decade?” the X post said. Fans, already carrying the weight of disappointment after the 20-year-old’s defeat, entered the comment section to relate to the statement.

One was already thinking of the Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, a rivalry where the American absolutely dominated the Russian. They met 22 times in their career and Sharapova was only able to overpower Williams twice. The fan wrote, “I was literally thinking that this is karma for salivating that Maria/Serena h2h.” This time, the numbers stand overwhelmingly against the American.

Another fan was surprised by the close connection, “I was JUST thinking about this. Like DAMN…” The author also seemed to be shocked about witnessing the repetition of history. “How the turntables,” they reacted, noting how the once leading country (player) was now in shambles.

Expressing remorse over Coco Gauff’s back-to-back defeats, a fan wrote, “Bruhhh it’s looking like the tables have turned on us because what is this constant beat down????” And a beat down it has been, because while it seems Gauff is improving, Swiatek somehow always seems to be better.

“I cackled, but I just know they felt worse. Iga is no Serena Jameka Williams,” a fan wrote, acknowledging the similar fate along with strictly denying Iga’s resemblance to that of Serena Williams’ legendary career. The two have often been equated together but the 20-year-old has a long way to go if she is to successfully carry on Serena’s legacy.

“Omg you’re right,” a fan affirmed, sadly accepting the bitter truth. Serena Williams ended her career with 20 massive wins out of the 22 matches played against Maria Sharapova. While Gauff’s number currently depicts a similar situation, fans will have to accept the situation, no matter how hard they try to justify it.

With these and several other comments on a similar note, the fans affirmed the speculated similarity between Gauff-Swiatek and Serena-Sharapova’s rivalry. As the Pole now looks forward to defending her title, the final hurdle is yet to be determined.

The semi-final showdown between Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek unleashed a huge pack of drama. Although the Pole didn’t waste much time to finish off her rival, there still were several moments that gave out the young American’s disappointment.

Soon after losing the first set to the Pole, Gauff had an idea of her fate. In the second set, Iga hit a serve that originally was marked as out. As a response to the out call, the WTA star didn’t return and therefore the chair umpire overruled the out call. Already battling with enough frustration in her mind, the US Open champion couldn’t contain her emotions, and tears were seen rolling down her cheeks.

Coco Gauff’s presence in the recent match didn’t seem to be as confident as her previous showdowns. While she appeared to be way behind her original form, it is evident that she needs to train mentally as well as physically to overcome the hurdles.
