Coco Gauff’s first day at the Australian Open was nothing short of eventful—think commanding wins, heartfelt celebrations, and a dash of humor. The 20-year-old tennis star kicked off her campaign with a dominant 6-3, 6-3 victory over 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, setting the tone for what could be another remarkable tournament. But the win wasn’t the only thing she had to celebrate; it was her parents’ wedding anniversary, too. And to wind down after the amazing day, she went to catch Mufasa: The Lion King, in the theatres. Yet, despite all this, it turns out there was something (or someone) she hilariously overlooked.
For those curious about the overlooked mention, it was none other than her coach Matt Daly’s birthday. The 2023 US Open champion made light of the oversight in a candid comment on Tennis Channel’s Instagram post, writing, “and my coach’s birthday which I forgot mention on the interview lol”
Daly, a technical specialist, joined Gauff’s coaching team in October 2024 alongside her longtime coach, Jean-Christophe “JC” Faurel. He replaced Brad Gilbert after Gauff’s early US Open exit in 2024 and their partnership has been a game-changer. Daly has worked on improving Gauff’s serve and overall strategy, leading to outstanding results in a short span.

Under Daly’s guidance, Gauff secured titles at the China Open and WTA Finals in Riyadh, victories that cemented her place as one of the game’s rising superstars. She’s also been in red-hot form heading into 2025, winning the United Cup for Team USA and earning the MVP award after defeating World No. 2 Iga Swiatek in the final. Since partnering with Daly, Coco Gauff has won 19 of her last 21 matches—an incredible streak that speaks volumes about their teamwork.
However, did you know that we wouldn’t be seeing this young starlet make such strides if she had followed her father, Cori Gauff’s wishes?

Coco Gauff’s post-match interview wasn’t just about the win; it also offered a glimpse into her fashion choices. She took to the court in a backless white bodysuit with cutouts and a green camo asymmetrical skirt, paired with New Balance sneakers that caught everyone’s attention. While the look was stylish and practical for battling the Melbourne heat, the sneakers came with a surprising backstory.

Did Coco Gauff's dad miss out on a basketball star, or is tennis her true calling?

“My shoes are inspired by basketball shoes because that’s the sport my dad wanted me to play, but I’m glad I chose tennis,” Gauff revealed. Her father, Corey Gauff, was a former college basketball player, so the influence makes perfect sense. However, her decision to pursue tennis instead has undoubtedly worked in her favor—and fans everywhere couldn’t agree more.

The 20-year-old tennis sensation has been redefining tennis fashion since signing with New Balance as a teenager in 2018. Her ability to mix functionality with bold, standout designs continues to set her apart both on and off the court.
With her first-round match behind her, Coco Gauff is now gearing up to face British player Jodie Burrage in the second round. The World No.3 had reached the semifinals of last year’s tournament but was bested by eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. She will be looking to go even further this time around and clinch the trophy. Will she keep her winning streak alive and win her second Grand Slam at the Australian Open?
