It was her grandmother, Yvonne Lee Odom. Candy Gauff’s mother was suffering from stage four lung cancer and came out victorious in her battle against the deadly disease. In an old interview, the American spoke in detail about the impact her grandmother had on her life.
Coco Gauff on her inspirational grandmother
Battling a gruesome disease like cancer and coming out victorious is really brave. Coco Gauff had the experience of watching one of her close family members going through it. The 18-year-old learned a lot from her grandmother’s struggle. Here’s what she said about the same in an interview three years ago.
“It taught us a lot that you can be going through a lot and going through some of the worst times, but you remain happy and believe in God. Anything is possible,” Gauff said.
Gauff gave the interview at her home and her grandmother was also present alongside the Roland Garros finalist. While Coco said high words of praise about her grandmother, she cheekily replied, “I’ve got a beautiful granddaughter but she still has to clean her room.”
Gauff rose through the ranks rapidly and made it as high as WTA number four this year. After Serena Williams’ retirement, she is being touted as the next big thing in American tennis.

Further, the 18-year-old had a good run in the US Open where she made it to the quarterfinals. However, her form derailed in the last few matches of the year as she failed to win any of her group-stage matches in the WTA Finals, and ended her year with five straight defeats.
