Can Coco Gauff bounce back from this brutal 2024 season, or is she overrated?

Reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff has no choice but to face the wrath of the tennis enthusiasts. Starting the year with a promising win at ASB Classic, Gauff couldn’t bag any other victory this season in women’s singles. However, she progressed to the number 2 rank right next to her biggest competitor, Iga Swiatek. As WTA reveals her performance this season so far, disappointed fans unleash their anger, showing how desperately they want Gauff to improve her run this year.

The official X page of WTA shared a Venn Diagram of tennis players winning WTA 250, 500, and 1000 events. “A few new faces added to the Venn diagram. Which WTA title winners by tournament level will we see in the second half of 2024?” tweeted the page. However, this tweet fueled the anger of fans, who were visibly disappointed at Gauff’s position in that diagram. Gauff won only one tournament this year, which was a WTA 250 event early in January, but she managed to rise to rank 2 in the world.

Despite reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open, Indian Wells Masters, Italian Open, and French Open, she has not taken any major or Master home. Since she shows such promise, her current place, given that she is ranked 2, has brought a lot of disappointment to tennis fans.

Fans find it “insane” to witness the lackluster performance of Coco Gauff despite her shining rank

Since WTA tweeted their Venn Diagram featuring Coco in the spot for players with WTA 25o victories, fans fumed in anger showing direct criticisms for Gauff’s performance so far. One fan commented, “Can everyone tell me what section world number 2 Coco Gauff is in? , whilst we head into the 8th month of the calendar year.” The reigning US Open champion reached this rank on 10th June this season despite only a WTA 250 win. For Gauff fans, it was a moment of frustration and anger. The comment took an indirect jibe at the WTA star’s rank despite her poor winning record this season.

Another fan sarcastically criticized Gauff’s poor performance along with her winning the ESPYS Best Tennis Player title this year. “Where is Espy’s best player in the world? Oh, nevermind… I’ve found her,” commented the fan. Gauff won the 2024 ESPYs’ Best Tennis Player over Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz despite the fact that Swiatek won the Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters, Madrid Open, Italian Open, and the French Open. On the other hand, Alcaraz has won two Grand Slams this season. Gauff bagging the Best Tennis Player seemed unjustified to many tennis fans due to the achievements of the two.

Another fan took a direct jibe at Gauff’s performance this season and called her, “oh miss Gaufful.” One can easily understand how that angry fan called Gauff awful by making a sarcastic comparison to her only one WTA 250 win. She has come close to some titles, but fell flat in single’s with a doubles slam in her corner.

Fans were visibly angry as they said, “It’s fucking insane where you put coco.” Gauff faced a lot of backlash when she lost to Emma Navarro at 2024 Wimbledon in the fourth round. Since the French Open fans have been calling out the former US Open champion for her subpar forehand skills. Now, witnessing WTA’s post, people couldn’t control but unleash their anger, questioning how Gauff pulled off such feats without performing her best.

It seemed that tennis fans questioned WTA’s credibility seeing Gauff at such a respectable position despite any remarkable performance in 2024.Soso only in 250 and she’s ranked number 2 in the world?! Oh WTA in the trenches,” commented another fan, showing serious concern over WTA’s status.

Tennis fans’ disappointment with Coco Gauff after she displayed a stellar performance in the American hardcourt swing in 2023 is clear. Will they catch a break and see Gauff break past her shortcomings in hard court season about to come up?
