A quartet of trailblazers is redefining the boundaries of women’s tennis! As the 2024 season hurtles towards its climax, the WTA race to the final is reaching its boiling point! In 2023, Jessica Pegula had a pretty good run in the event by reaching the finals, but Iga Swiatek conquered the courts! This year, Pegula will have a backup, as her compatriots, Coco Gauff, Danielle Collins, and others will also fight to bring the coveted trophy to America.
Following the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters, there has been a shakeup in the top 8 race leaderboard, who will be competing for the WTA Finals! Top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff solidified their positions at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, in the Race to the WTA Finals after reaching the quarterfinals and Round of 16 in Toronto. Interestingly, among the top eight, Collins, Pegula, and Emma Navarro have occupied crucial spots, making American fans hopeful of a trophy this season!
For the World No. 3 player Gauff, the tournaments proved to be unproductive, as her momentum hit a roadblock (in both events) even before reaching the quarterfinals. But the 20-year-old player need not be concerned, as her No. 5 spot on the leaderboard still shines brightly! Her compatriot, Collins is chasing Gauff not from far behind.

And with one rank below her, the Miami Open and Charleston Open winner, Collins, is sitting pretty at No. 6! She might be retiring after this season, but we are sure to witness the 30-year-old’s dominant presence in WTA Final before that! Moreover, her resurgence to the top 12 this season and an Olympic debut have indeed alluded to her potential to “go off with a bang,” after in 2024! The 23-year-old Navarro is not far behind as well!
A standout performance in Toronto propelled Emma Navarro into the top eight of the WTA Race. Her semifinal finish earned her 390 points, lifting her from No. 11 to No. 7. The American player has qualified for six semifinal events this season and has swiftly made it to world No. 13 in the WTA ranking list. Therefore, she is surely going to be a tough competitor in the WTA race to final as well! Next up is Pegula, whose late-season rise to stardom has left us in awe!
Take her Canadian Open victory as an example. Following an early exit from the Olympics and having a year full of withdrawals (from the French Open, Italian Open, and Madrid Open) and injuries, her comeback seemed unlikely. But defying the odds, Pegula’s Toronto triumph propelled her from world No. 20 to No. 11 in the WTA Race, gaining 1,000 crucial points. With her subsequent Cincinnati final appearance, she secured an additional 650 points, overtaking Navarro to claim the seventh spot in the Race and pushing her to the 8th spot.

Moreover, we hope to see Coco Gauff fulfill her “dream,” of winning the WTA Finals too as she mentioned last year.

Coco Gauff speaks on her “dream” of winning the year-end-championships
In 2023, Gauff’s U.S. Open victory marked a beginning of a new chapter in the American’s career graph. As she clinched her first grand slam of the year, her chances to win the WTA Finals seemed pretty high. But sadly, a semifinal loss to Pegula had an unwelcomed result. Although she couldn’t make it to the final round in her second attempt, her perspective on the event underwent a drastic change.
“I think as I’ve grown as a pro on tour, I learned more about what the WTA Finals is about. I’d definitely say that would be a goal of mine now, after competing in it for 2 years & realizing this is the best of the best.”

Moreover, the American added, “I do think I can improve. It would definitely be a dream. If I had to choose, I’d rather win another Slam. But it’s definitely a dream. I think this tournament is one of the most challenging. Not only because it’s the Top 8, but because it’s the end of the season.”
In the Olympics, the women’s team did not manage to bring a gold medal to America. But now As Gauff aims to better her chances this year in the WTA Finals, the 20-year-old player will be accompanied by Pegula, Collins and Navarro to have a perfect end to the season by bringing a trophy to their nation!
