Townsend enters Cincinnati’s Round of 32 after defeating Caroline Dolehide by 3-6, 6-4, 7(9)-6(7). After the match was over, this American tennis player went into an emotional rollercoaster as her father attended her match. High school Administrator by profession, Townsend’s father, Gary Townsend, has always supported his daughter’s professional dreams. After her victory, she recalled an incident which motivated her for Cincinnati.
“Yeah so I’ll let you guys in on a little thing. I was feeling emotional this morning and last night. It kind of all hit me at once having my family and friends with me. It’s something that doesn’t make me uncomfortable… But I’m not used to it. We’re so used to being on the road by ourselves. It’s really special to be able to look over at my box and have people that I really love and care about.”

Her special message to her father showcases that Townsend is still a daddy’s girl even though she is a mother herself. “I’m so happy you’re here. My dad took off work. He’s like ‘I’m here til the end.’ We’re gonna keep rocking dad. Let’s go,“ she said.

Townsend’s statement echoed her love for family. She was only 12 when her parents divorced, and tennis was her way to deal with this stressful time. Gary always stood by her, and now that she flourishes on the court, he is even more proud of her achievements. After winning that match, Townsend introduced her grandmother to the audience and said, “She’s in charge of our family group text, so she texts everyone in my family, my scores, if I lose or win, usually when I win, so it’s okay. This is her first time watching me play live, it’s super special for me.” Townsend also mentioned her delight as that was her grandmother’s first visit to her matches.
