The tennis world was all eyes and ears as Coco Gauff battled for a place in the finals at Roland Garros. Iga Swiatek, who already had a massive head-to-head lead of 10 matches to 1, went home the winner this time as well. The young American ended the night in tears because of what many perceived to be a wrong call by the umpire. While fans sympathized with Gauff, her compatriot Chris Evert‘s excessive backing went unappreciated.

Evert is known to be a true supporter of Gauff, keeping in view her admiration for women’s tennis in the US. Even last year, before the 20-year-old had claimed the US Open trophy, Evert had picked Gauff as the next big thing in tennis over the 2022 winner Iga Swiatek.

This time, while the odds clearly predicted a bad reality for Coco Gauff as the Pole was expected to win, the former pro’s blind support even after holding the position of a commentator triggered fans’ frustration to a great extent.

A fan, disregarding Evert’s extensive biases towards her compatriot, wrote, “Chris Evert is nauseatingly biased in favour of Gauff. You should fire her and get someone who’s balanced and fair!” Their major target was to disapprove of the former pro’s position as the Tennis Channel’s commentator.

Evert’s commentary sessions are consistently based on Gauff’s on and off-court aspects. Expressing frustration over the one-sided bias, another fan wrote, “please someone tell C Evert to stop. She’s there to comment and that’s it. It’s embarrassing and it’s annoying. Coco this, Coco that.. Coco, Coco, Coco STOP FFS!” While many might actually like Gauff, Evert’s prejudice may turn them against her.

“Chris evert wants Coco to win so bad,” another fan said, reflecting on the former pro’s delusional thoughts about the US Open champion. While many might be rooting for Gauff, a commentator is expected to be more neutral.

A fan specifically pointed out one of Chris Evert’s statements from the live commentary session. “I KNOW I didn’t just hear CHRIS EVERT says CG’s backhand is “the best in the women’s game hands down” GIRL GO SIT DOWN,” he wrote, clearly opposing the crown given to Gauff. While technicalities would suggest the statement is actually true, but the 20-year-old still has a ways to go before she can do it properly.

“Nahhh i have to listen to Chris Evert waffle about Coco Gauff now,” a fan wrote, weeping over the known fact that Evert would continue to side with the young American, regardless of what the live scenario depicts. Iga Swiatek clearly winning, and yet Evert is supporting her compatriot.

Even when Gauff’s controversy with the umpire came to light, and she shed tears of frustration at the unfairness of it all and a lack of video replay, Evert blasted the chair umpire. “She is right, by the way. Coco Gauff is right, absolutely. She would never, ever tell a lie to the umpire. She is crying. That is awful, awful officiating, the umpire’s decision. She is saying that she had a play on it,” the American tennis veteran said.

Not many are ready to tolerate Chris Evert’s extensive backing for Coco Gauff now. While the young American has already given up the first set, her fate in the tournament is yet to be witnessed. Meanwhile, it’s the Polish opponent being compared to the American legend on clay.

Iga Swiatek becomes the center of attraction by matching Chris Evert’s feat

Iga Swiatek’s massive win over Coco Gauff established a strong magnitude. Along with securing a massive feat by making it to the third consecutive final at Roland Garros, she also sits on a win streak which drew her name parallel to that of the WTA legend Chris Evert.

According to the records, Swiatek etched her name into the history books by securing 34 main draw wins by appearing in a total of 36 showdowns at Roland Garros. This means that the Pole lost just two matches on her journey of securing three titles already and looking forward to add one more. This feat became even more special as it was last secured by none other than the sporting legend Chris Evert.

Despite the former pro’s firm backing for Gauff, the fact that her rival managed to draw a parallel record added a twist in the story. As Swiatek aims at defending her title, she is just one step behind achieving immense glory along with new records in her name.
