It was only the start. Evert surprised even her father when she won her first two Grand Slam at the age of 19, as he did not believe her when she called to announce her victory at Wimbledon.
Evert recalled “They didn’t televise matches [live],” she said. “They taped them, and then they played them later. So, he had no idea. So, I came off the court and went right into the sort of the office, [called him], and I said, ‘Dad, I won!'”

She pushed herself and reached for the top rung right away because of her talent, self-control, and desire. Evert clung to every opportunity like a ferocious terrier, never letting go unless forced. She never lost a match in the first or second round of significant competition. For such, Evert simply wouldn’t accept defeat.
She won 18 Grand Slam singles titles while she was at the pinnacle of the women’s game, including seven French Open, six U.S. Opens, three at Wimbledon, and two Australian Open. She still holds the record for the most U.S. Open victories with six, and her win-loss percentage of 90% is still the best of any male or female professional tennis player.
