The spotlight has recently shifted to the Middle East, where attempts to secure prestigious events have stirred a dichotomy within the tennis community. Navratilova expressed genuine apprehension, “I absolutely would worry. I would worry for them as women. I would worry for them as gay women.”

This highlights the concerns for the safety and rights of female players in Saudi Arabia. Navratilova’s stance also reveals a cautionary tone, questioning the ethical implications of prioritizing financial gain over human rights. Evert was found aligning herself with Navratilova’s concerns. She  called for a thoughtful examination of the cultural and legal landscape in Saudi Arabia.

In her words: “The players need to take a very close and serious look at the culture, the laws, and the treatment of women in Saudi Arabia before they make an educated and moral decision on whether to play over there.” Her words underline the importance of an informed decision-making process. She also urged players to weigh the significance of their participation against the backdrop of societal values.

Tennis and its ongoing struggle

As tennis contemplates its future engagements in the Middle East, the shadows of discrimination against women and LGBTQ+ athletes loom large. This isn’t unfamiliar terrain for the sport. In the annals of tennis history, the struggle against discrimination was ignited by Billie Jean King. She sparked a wave of activism that has endured.

Navratilova is a torchbearer of this legacy as she continues to champion the cause. King initiated the conversation but it was Navratilova who steadfastly kept the flame alive.
