Is Chris Evert ruining the US Open experience with her commentary? What do you think?

Players from all across the globe entered the US Open 2024 with one common goal: attaining glory! Although some failed to do so by facing unexpected defeats in the early rounds, others managed to earn a fair share of it. While they continue to fight for glory, former pro Chris Evert seems to be losing hers day by day. ESPN authorized her as a commentator considering she would capture the attention of the fans with her unique perspective on the game. However, it seems like things are not exactly going in the expected direction.

Aryna Sabalenka is currently focused on making her mark at the US Open this year! She recently made it to the finals, scheduled to be played on Saturday. The Belarusian earned this slot by winning against Emma Navarro with a final scoreline of 6-3 and 7-6 (2). The second seed is now hoping to earn her third Grand Slam singles win with two Australian Open titles already in her portfolio. While the evening was supposed to be all Sabalenka, Chris Evert was heard backing the American over baseless facts.

The match turned out to be an easy win for the Belarusian as she managed to take her rival down in straight sets. Despite being evidently overpowered in front of a massive crowd spectating live, the former WTA pro was seen biasedly siding with her compatriot. Although it was a big achievement for the nation to see her earn a slot in the finals, the fact that she was downtrodden against The Tiger’s dominance was swiftly accepted by the fans.

This not only sparked concerns over Chris Evert’s nature of backing American players but also raised questions about the authority of ESPN as a renowned network. These issues didn’t take long to find their way on social media and therefore the trouble began for the former WTA pro.

Fans lash out at Chris Evert over biased and incomplete insight delivery

As soon as the showdown between Aryna Sabalenka and Emma Navarro came to an end, posts about the Belarusian star’s celebration made way on social media. Among the top trends, another update sneaked in and talked about how Chris Evert always fails to deliver relevant information regarding matches and is centered across a particular entity or subject. A fan was quick enough to demand the media network to get Evert out of the scenes. Stating the reason behind his request, he added, “they’re so bad, lack knowledge about tennis outside of slams, and do not offer much insight at all.” Evert joined hands with ESPN back in 2011. Although she has spent a notable period with the company, it seems like the fans no longer support her presence.

Another fan directly regarded Evert as a “terrible commentator”. Quoting what she stated during her commentary session at the semi-final showdown, he added, “Emma has two things that make her a great tennis player belief in herself and you know what else? she’s having fun.”

The whole NY crowd was siding with Navarro. Although she was the fans’ favorite, the commentator’s job doesn’t allow them to side with the players of their own choice. “Chris Evert is biased towards Navarro.. that’s not fair with Sabalenka..” a comment said, highlighting how the former pro was all vocal about her compatriot.

While other commentators were specifically trying to compliment Sabalenka, Evert continued to draw a parallel between the victor and Navarro. “this is really impressive from both players right now” she wrote, trying to showcase a better image of her compatriot.

A comment pointed out the fact that Chris Evert regarded this showdown as the “best match of the tournament”. While fans didn’t really relate to it because of Navarro’s downgraded performance, it was the former WTA pro who became the target of flak.

With these and several other comments on a similar note, the fans made it clear that they were not at all satisfied with Evert’s commentary, As people stepped forward to highlight this issue to a greater extent, it still remains to be seen if there are any more updates to come during the rest of the tournament.
