The year 2024 has been a year full of mega events both positive and negative. Tennis world saw the rise of two young stars, Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek dominating the courts who also went through the toughest phase of their life. With both stars being exposed to doping, they faced massive backlash from the tennis world. However, this has also proved to be a major learning lesson for all, including the likes of Emma Raducanu.

Emma Raducanu has adopted a cautious approach to her diet and supplements after Iga Swiatek faced a doping controversy. Speaking to British reporters in London, Raducanu explained how the incident has made her even more vigilant about what she consumes to avoid a similar situation.

“There are certain supplements that I may want to take, but I can’t take them because they’re (sold) over the counter and they’re not batch-tested,” Raducanu shared. She added that batch testing for supplements costs approximately a thousand pounds for a single item, making it expensive. Raducanu suggested that while essential supplements are worth the cost, many non-essential ones must be avoided entirely.

Raducanu also detailed how careful she is about food and drink safety. “I’m very careful with what I drink, what I eat, if I leave my water around, I’m very on edge about it. But it’s just part of the sport, we’re all in the same boat,” she said.

Her comments came after Swiatek tested positive for trimetazidine, a banned substance found in her melatonin medication, which was contaminated. While the ITIA ruled the consumption as unintentional – the incident has prompted Raducanu to take extra precautions in her career. However, she is not the only one who is being cautious amidst the doping saga. Holger Rune, in an interview also shared how he’s trying to keep up with the rules and regulations.

Just like Emma Raducanu, Holger Rune also opened up about how careful he is with his supplements

Holger Rune recently opened up about the measures he takes to ensure his career remains free from doping controversies. Speaking during an interview at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS), Rune said, “We’ve had a lot of doping controls this year. Just before the Olympics this year, I had about 20, and that’s a lot, but they do everything to keep the sport clean, which is very, very important.”  He talked about the importance of such regular checks in maintaining integrity in tennis.

Rune also spoke about the cautious steps he takes in his daily routine to avoid any issues. “I’m very careful about the supplements I take like any player, but it can be unfortunate or it can be something else (if you test positive),” he explained. He shared an example of his discipline, saying, “Personally, I’m always careful about what I eat and drink. If I forget a drink somewhere, I never take it again.” Rune believes this vigilance is essential to protect his career and ensure he can continue playing the sport he loves.
