Can Naomi Osaka bounce back from this airline fiasco, or is her Cincinnati run already doomed?

Former US Open champion Naomi Osaka‘s life has been jolted by a series of unprecedented events lately. Not only did she lose in Toronto but something found more disappointment following the loss. Her luggage, at the moment, is somewhere out in the world, just not with her. Despite such a harrowing incident this week, Osaka is keeping herself quite well.

The Japanese player was traveling to attend the 2024 Cincinnati Open after losing against Belgium’s Elise Mertens in the Round of 32, 3-6, 4-6 in Toronto. The former US Open champion didn’t waste her time in disappointment and decided to try her luck in the next tournament when she faced a surprising moment that turned her dream into agony.

Osaka tweeted on her X page and informed her followers that her airline lost her luggage. “lol @united lost my bags and if I don’t get them tonight or tomorrow I literally can’t play Cinncinati 😂😂😂,” she wrote. Despite the former number 1 adding laughing emojis to her tweet, people could sense trouble. While she didn’t clearly mention her situation in detail, it seemed her luggage had her important tennis gear.

After Osaka’s defeat to Mertens in the R32, her fans and tennis fans in general were rather saddened. This former US Open champion brought immense hope when she defeated Ons Jabeur in the R64 and revealed taking ballet lessons to perform a split forehand like her idol, Serena Williams. However, she couldn’t reach far despite playing on her favorite surface, and now her Cincinnati Open dream hangs in the air following the airlines’ negligence.

The situation might not be in the WTA star’s hands but she kept her spirits up with a humorous take on the situation. Despite not leaving an expected impression in Toronto, Osaka was humble in her statement, accepting her mistakes with the confidence to turn the tables next time.

During her match against Martens, Osaka made many errors on the baseline and then eventually she lost her momentum to stand tall till the end. While she lost against the Belgian WTA star, she was confident and also admitted her shortcomings. “I feel like I could have put a bit more on the court, a bit more from the baseline shots, I got a bit caught up in the idea of being consistent and staying in the exchanges, I don’t know,” she said.

However, she was impressive everyone when she refused to burden herself with the thoughts of failure. “I’m happy with how I fought despite not winning, but I feel like I learned a lot. I know there will be many tough defeats like this one, but hopefully, I hope to be back in the top ten soon,” said Osaka.

Losing luggage can be a real menace and Osaka’s current situation reveals a picture quite close to that. However, despite all this, the Japanese WTA star’s confidence and her ability to keep her cool deserve much applause from everyone.
