Did the rain rob Jessica Pegula and Taylor Townsend of their deserved victories at the Canadian Open?

Taylor Townsend‘s ongoing campaign in Toronto became the center of attraction for a large audience. Although her hopes to be in the main draw were drowned with a defeat in the qualifying match, she somehow received a spot, being regarded as the lucky loser. Now that the WTA star was supposed to be in a crucial showdown against Jelena Ostapenko, the rain gods decided to hinder the competition.

Taylor Townsend secured a massive win in her R32 showdown against Marina Stakusic. The American, who experienced the ups and downs of competition, finally started gaining momentum with the grass court season, eventually laying her hands on the glorious Wimbledon trophy. While it seemed like there was nothing that could stop her, heavy rains made a wild card entry in the came, marking a delay in her round of 16 matchup against Jelena Ostapenko.

According to the reports from an active tennis journalist, Centre Court is experiencing the wrath of unpleasant weather which could possibly mark an extensive delay, wiping off the possibility of resuming any match before noon. “Heavy rain in Toronto Friday morning… No play until Noon at earliest but expect it to be later,” the post was captioned.

This means that not only Townsend but other players in today’s schedule will also have to be in the shade for now. Jessica Pegula, who was set to be in an all-American showdown against Ashlyn Krueger, also became a victim of the weather. Although she was successful in clearing her doubles match alongside Giuliana Olmos, the rain delay helped buy a little more time to relax and prepare herself for the next one.

As the unexpected events were unveiled, it reminded fans of the warning laid by the French Open runner-up Alexander Zverev regarding a missing feature in the North American hard court arenas.

Alexander Zverev recently shared his thoughts on the presence of roofs in the North American arenas. He mentioned that while it’s not his decision to decide whether there should be a roof or not, the absence still concerns him. The German explained, “When there is a roof it’s always nice because we know that we can play on and we can kind of there’s no delays.” He pointed out that many North American tournaments, except the US Open, don’t have roofs.

“A lot of North American tournaments have no roof so or almost all of them except the US Open don’t have a roof so um it’s normal. In Europe I think it’s uh it’s a bit more advanced in that regard,” Zverev said, comparing the scenes to the European clay court events. While the German is authorized with a massive history at the Canadian Open, having won the event in 2017 by defeating Roger Federer in the final, his statement ignited discussions. Although the rain delay was completely unexpected it is surely a reason for the authorities to reconsider the importance of a roof.
